AFL 50th Season-versary Logo

It's nice to see all the differences each team came up with with all these logos. Sure, the Bills one is a bit weird, but at least the league left the design up to each team instead of mailing in a corporate template. That's refreshing in sports these days. Imagine if Reebok (or any other company) had gotten the chance to design all of these.

That said, the KC logo looks disappointing so far.

? The Chargers shield is nice but the type in a circle is just bad design.

THAT type in a circle or all type in a circle is bad design?

I meant just THAT type in a circlle. It's just floating out there around the shield. To make that a patch you now have to have a huge amount of white space, essentially you'll have a big white circle with some illegible type and a shield in the middle. It's sloppy and not well thought out.

I guess that's supposed to be a reference to the Chargers' original logos, but it only demonstrates why the current Chargers logo sucks. The curved lightning bolt just doesn't work on its own.

I disagree. On its own the lightning bolt is just fine. When you simply place it on top of a shield it doesn't work. The Chargers' 50th logo is uninspiring at best (though still better then Oakland's and Denver's, IMO), but not because of the lightning bolt. The designers failed to take the shield and bolt logos and integrate them together. Instead they just put one on top of the other.

I was hoping to see this guy make a comeback for the 50th patch....

I found these uniforms sets for the 2009 season on www.wikipedia.org. Not sure if they are totally for sure but the Patiorts one has the 50th Anniversary logo on it so I assume it is offical. The Titans/Oilers one you have to scroll down a bit and it says a proposed uniform set for 2009.

The Oiler set is wrong at least. If I remember correctly, the press release about the Bills/Oilers HoF game said the Titans would be wearing the old blue Oilers helmets, not the whites.

Although it is totally and completely shocking that wikipedia would have errant information on it. Usually it's the standard by which all knowledge in the universe is measured.

It did say on the website that it was a proposed Titans uniform set. It also looks like the Patriots one is wrong too as Mr Kraft is holding up a white jersey and not a red one. Does this picture now confirm that they are only wearing one jersey or are they just not showing the other ones?

I'm glad the Titans are wearing the blue helmets. I like those better anyways. And I sure hope the Broncos break out those vertical striped sock for that brown and yellow uniform from 1960. That would be awesome!

The main AFL one is a good logo, but a little wonky on the facts. The 50th Anniversary would be better celebrated, as this is not the 50th season of a league which ceased to be 40 years ago.

Start by counting "one" for 1960. when you get to 2009, you'll have counted to fifty.

The math was never an issue, just the implication in the logo, intended or otherwise, that the AFL was in its 50th season. I think it's a very worthy commemoration in spirit, just a little goofy in application.

But then again, that doesn't seem to be the inference that others drew in later conversation, so I considered it a dead issue.

You could make the argument for either one depending on your viewpoint...I don't think it's "Goofy" to do it in 2009 as opposed to the anniversary year of 2010.

As for that Jet logo, I'm disappointed they didn't use their primary. The "NY" logo has only been around since circa 2002 or so.

It would take quite a large patch to say "The Season that Would Have Been the AFL's 50th".
