St. Louis Cardinals

Alright, so I've been meaning to get my first MLB concept out of the way for a while now. I've always had the desire to modernize the Cardinals logo, and finally got around to it.

The first thing you'll notice is the colors. I darkened the red and navy a tad, and got rid of the yellow-yellow for a more vegas gold color. I think it makes the whole set look modern as a whole.

On the logos, I added an extra outline with the vegas gold, and changed the eye to look fiercer. I made the detail lines on the bird sharper instead of rounded as well.

For the unis, used the double outline throughout, and the Padres font since I thought it matched the whole modernizing feel pretty well. A red and navy alternate as well, and a new red/blue brim cap for the home alt.

This is a great looking set. I love the new cardinla face and the addition of gold. The cardinal looks a lot better, the new eye makes it look fierce. My only grip would be to have an all red cap for the home set. I like that the Cardinlas have a primary red cap at home and a primary blue cap on the road and I think you should keep that. This is a great update of the current set. Amazing work as always Chestnut.

OK...since this is the Cardinals, you're tapping into a level of fan avidity that is probably a tad "unhealthy," so any changes for this team in particular will be judged harder than most concepts.

So please don't take it personally when I say that this redo is well-below average in every possible way.

First what I do agree with:

1) I think it's time for the road unis to say "St. Louis," but you missed by not including the absolutely necessary Birds on the Bat in the logo. Without it, it's an incomplete identity for the Cardinals.

2) I like unique numbers, so I'd go with something completely customized, not just ripped from another team's identity package.

Now for the (hopefully) constructive criticism:

1) The Vegas gold is a very bad idea. Consider how this looks in ALL applications (something 95% of these concepts forget to consider): print, online (see Colorwerx's calibration tutorial) and embroidery. That gold never, ever translates across all three primary applications.

2) The current red (200) is the perfect red; not to light (485) and not to dark (187). I agree the blue could go darker, but navy is almost universally 289...although the Cards' road cap (and Red Sox, Yankees and Braves) is really 5395.

3) Since you have two relatively dark colors (200 and 289/5395), you need the yellow as a complement. The Vegas gold gives you three dark/dull colors, and that will look awful when viewed from a distance or on TV.

4) The eye has no definition at all. It's certainly not fierce.

I would not call this a modernization...it's a re-coloring. What the F-Boyz did to the Cardinals' script for the ASG logo is a modernization. There's nothing new of substance in this re-coloring.

I'd name that color "head cold yellow."

The backs of the jerseys look like a cross between the Braves and the Padres, the bird's eye looks strange, and it all tends to get muddled from a distance. I do like that you tried to get St. Louis on the roads, but as mentioned, it ought to go with the birds-on-bat. It's a decent concept with good intentions and the rendering is nice, but it's not an overall improvement. I fear that we throw "amazing" around too carelessly here.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

My first reaction is that there isn't enough red. I like that you put St Louis on the roads, but like others have said, I think it needs the birds on the bat. I think you should find a set of numbers that aren't currently being used by another baseball team. The new eye also needs more work. I like that you are trying to update the Cardinal, but this eye makes the bird look more Asian than fierce. Also, if you are modernizing the logo, why just modernize it around the head, I would work updates into the rest of the bird, like thicker, bolder lines around the tail feathers and wing. I hope that helps.

I don't know...I think you fell into a couple of cliche traps here, with the Vegas Gold, and the pupil-less eye. All animals don't need to be sneering and vicious; I think it's okay for especially the older franchises to just remain more plain and dignified looking. The set looks forced as a whole, especially with the number font. The whites and grays are far too reminiscent of Atlanta, and I have never been a fan of different colored brims.

I really like the updated logo. but I do agree with a few of the others above, the red is too dark and there should be more of it, and the gold seems a little out of place with the Cardinals. but other than that, I like it haha

I like the darkening of the Navy and Red, however I do not like the shade of yellow/gold you used. It just doesn't scream Cardinals to me. The uniforms are good, except the Alternate Away Navy jersey. If they adopted that jersey I would think about buying it even though I don't root for the Cardinals. That is just a beautiful uniform, good job.

As a lifelong, die-hard, bascially religiously Cardinals fan, I say I appreciate you're interest in our team, but there is no way this is an improvement. Besides, they just updated like 11 years ago. And for such a classic, timeless, simple look, they don't really need to make constant updates every decade. Other than maybe adding a red alt, fitting "St. Louis" on the aways (with the birds on the bat) or adding throwback alternate from the Musial era, the Cardinals look really doesn't need any changes.

I'll suspend reality and skip the whole "you can't touch this/fan outrage" bit. But for a 'modernization', it seems like all you really did was add trim to everything. I'm not that crazy about the gold, and I think it makes the set look too much like the Nationals. And I think you're close to decreasing the amount of red too much overall, which you should be mindful for a team called the "Cardinals".

That said, it's a very clean concept, great execution.

Well, don't take this as a serious critique, but as an avid bird watcher and aspiring ornithologist, one of my biggest pet peeves is that every Cardinal logo in existence includes a yellow beak. Cardinals have red beaks, so if you were to update the St Louis Cardinals, you could learn from Arizona's mistakes and righteously update the beak color in accordance to...well, what they actually look like.

Also, while I guess you are trying to make the eye look "edgy", I would suggest adding definition because 1) it makes it look less like a cardinal and 2) to be honest it looks somewhat soulless without a pupil or an iris or anything of that sort. I guess if that is what you were going for it works...

Also, I agree with the previous poster in that by making all three colors rather dark and drab, there is no real focal point. If you were to either keep the yellow and leave the dark red, or keep the red and leave the gold, the general color scheme would look a lot better.

Really, these are minor complaints... and from a design standpoint for the uniforms, I really like what you did. Good concept.
