Baltimore Sun Orioles Cartoon

I'm glad to see they're available online now, so we can share with you non-Baltimoreans. Now they just need to start running them on the front page (even if the score isn't actually news to me at 5:30 in the morning).

As for the style, I still love (and prefer) the Hartzell ones. However, Mike Ricigliano's overall style is completely different. So be it -- I can live with it.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

Cool tradition coming back. On another note, is that bird squatting on a base? It appears as though he is leaving a little something behind.

I'm pretty sure he is squatting on a base. The two lines running from his bottom toward the front of the base probably depict one of the straps that they used to use to hold the bases down . . . back in the old days.

I think those lines descending to the ground are his legs. The lines on either side of his torso on the base are his tail feathers.

At a time when print newspapers are literally disappearing, this kind of move that hearkens back to old-school publishing is just beautiful.

True enough. Part of the charm of the old ones is the under-statedness about them. The Bird flying over the Statue of Liberty, or chugging down a beer, or dragging around a tiger kitten by the tail, all with a great big grin across his beak, tells you everything without a caption.

I don't know if it is a permanent change, but today's cartoon was on the front page -- bottom left corner.

Like the idea, really don't like the actual drawings.

Same here. Love the idea, something about the execution really doesn't jibe with me.

I think the drawings are a bit over-done. Some of the 1966 bird simplicity is needed.

I agree it is a little overdone, but that just the Sun's cartoonist's style. It looks very similar to his other Sunday Morning cartoons. This is kinda what I expected.
