BallWonk
Just heard a radio report that the Connecticut Defenders have been sold to a group in Richmond that intends to move the team to Virginia's capital after the 2009 season.
Jigga
That's good news (for Richmond, anyway). It sucked to see the Braves leave. I'm sure that Richmond will support this new team quite well. BrySmalls
This has been in the rumor mill for the last couple of weeks though at one point I heard that it fell through. Also, Norwich would possibly receive the Jamestown Jammers.
RyanB06
Not a shock, considering New Britain has basically owned AA baseball around here for the last decade. Plus their ballpark is much easier to get to than the one in Norwich. AsM29
Would they keep the same name and identity? The Defenders logos are some of my favorites in all of Minor League Baseball.
BigMac12
Wait a second; I though the Calfornia League's Bakersfield franchise is moving to Richmond...
Ben5
I heard the Defenders are moving for sure, but they might be replaced with a rookie team.
The Swamp Yankee
I'm a Defenders season ticket holder, and the team draws no where near its high attendance marks of around 1996, when the club was a Yankee's affiliate. Attendance is actually rather embarrassing. Not only can the players hear your heckling, so can't the guy way on the other baseline. The proposed move does not surprise me. I had read in the paper about a month ago that the town was looking to get a short-season single A team.
