2009 NFL Draft

The only pick I saw in this year's draft was Succop. I hate that they changed the time. Can we get it back to a noon eastern start time on Saturday. Oh, and as a Bucs fan I ask this question, is there anyone in this draft I should be excited about, I look at the names and I cringe at all of them. I'm one who hates the Freeman pick because like Sanchez, he has bust written all over him.

I didn't like the Freeman pick either they didn't address the need they had at Linebacker or Running Back, Beanie Wells would have looked great in T-Bay.

I am very excited about the Bills draft, they filled their needs in LB/DE, OL, TE, and DB, and their TE. I really like Maybin, and believe that he will be a better pro then Orakpo or Cushing.

As for UB, sadly Drew Willy wasn't drafted, but was added as a UDFA of the Ravens, I can see him as the #3 QB on their squad, and may play with injuries along the line. Hopefully current UB players such as James Starks and Namman Roosevelt keep up with the early projections for next year. Both are said to be late first day or early second day picks in 2010.

This is gonna be a rough one, indeed.

So I'm watching the draft and one of the picks comes across the crawl and I think to myself, "Heh heh, those clowns in Cincinnati drafted a punter!" Next thing I see is that the Saints have not only drafted a punter but TRADED UP to do it! DOH!

Chase Daniel signs with Washington

I'm still trying to figure out how the hell this guy wasn't drafted. He was constantly in Heisman Trophy talks and has a pretty decent arm. Sure he's a bit small and his 40 time was a bit slow, but he still gets the job done. Had he not just signed in quarterback purgatory, I'd say he's got a shot to become one helluva QB.

They think he's too small for the NFL. His backup at Missouri was getting more looks from NFL scouts than Daniel was.

I just looked at this years list of undrafted free agents who have signed, these two along with Daniel really stand out to me.

Browns signed Gram Harrell (Texas Tech)- Set the NCAA record for passing TDs and had multiple 5,000 yard seasons.

Vikings signed Ian Johnson (Boise State) - Dude was ice cold in college, loved the proposal after the OU game.

You see, that's the one thing I hate about the NFL draft. You see guys like this who have insane numbers and the most epic moments in their sport's history and they'll probably be out of the game in a season or two, if they even make it past training camp. Then you see ESPN hype up guys like Matt Stafford, a guy who I can only remember getting killed by Alabama last season. I wish the truly memorable guys had more of a shot, but that's life I guess.

Yeah, there was a big ESPN Mag story on that. I'll post the link if I find it online but it seems it didn't work out too well for either of them. We'll see.

The Bears signed him apparently.

Who knows, it may work out for you guys. I hated the Flacco pick in last year's draft. I heard alot of people saying he'd be a bust, because he played in Division 1AA. It looked even worse when he was going to be the starter from Week 1. But it all worked out and now the Ravens look to have their first real QB. I haven't really seen any of Freeman, but its possible he could surprise people too.

You guys did get the best QB of the draft. :P Honestly I do believe that Drew Willy can be a solid backup in the NFL, he played in a pro style offense for all 4 years, and turned the program, you got a great guy on your team. Hopefully he pans out for the Ravens, but not good enough to challenge the Bills.

GO BILLS & BULLS!

Not just any punter, the best punter in the draft, and it was a need of the Bengals.

The pros are generally turned off by these spread QB's. There's a reason why Tim Tebow wants to take direct snaps under center this coming season....he knows he can't play only shotgun in the NFL. The defenses are too fast in the NFL for these spread QB's to adapt.

Stafford may not have been the best QB in college, but he's the best pro-ready QB in the Draft (in comparison to these spread QB's), hence the reason why not only was Stafford drafted, but drafted first overall.

I wonder if that's what eventually kills the spread in college. If top QBs think that playing in the spread hurts their NFL chances then they might not go to programs which use that offense, forcing teams to change to a more pro-style set to attract recruits.

I think that's what's going to happen. Kinda like how Option QB's are almost never successful when it comes to the NFL. Eric Crouch is a perfect example of this. Won the Heisman back when Nebraska was still running that heavy option system, ended up retiring after a couple of years.

Irvin Meyer led Utah to an undefeated season and got Alex Smith to be picked #1 overall, and has led Florida to two national championships in four seasons. You think he, or Mike Leach or any other spread-offense disciple, is suddenly going to switch to a pro-style offense just because guys like Harrell or Tebow don't get drafted as high as folks expected?

As long as they keep winning, high school recruits will come play for you, get the TV exposure, and gain the name value and get drafted higher than they should. The spread offense is used even more in high school than it is in college, so the spread offense is all most of these high school QB's know.
