Atlanta Falcons to wear throwbacks in 2009

Gotta love the thin gold stripes on the helmet, as an homage to Georgia Tech fans.

. . . while the UGA fans get the rest of the uniform. :P

All jokes aside...how are they gonna' squeeze the falcon logo on the thing formely known as a sleeve? I don't know the falcons uni history that well but is there a specific year that they are gonna' pin down these uni's to?

Weren't there a couple of years where the Falcon was actually placed inside the sleeve striping? They could go for that look. Regardless, this is my favorite uniform the Falcons ever wore. The black-heavy set of Glanville and Primetime was far too plain.

Even if doesn't see the field, looks like Reebok plans on making this:

Hopefully that's an error - those numbers better be gray when the finished product hits the racks.

Gray or white numbers, that's still an absolute beauty of a jersey. Why they dumped that for Glanville's ridiculous "man in black" schtick is beyond me.

I recall the throwbacks they wore in 94 were the 1980 unis, with just the northwestern striping and no falcon.

They also had white numbering, so I don't know exactly what year they were trying to capture with those.

The 1994 throwback was the mid 70s style that bridged the gap between the two. It was the style worn when Steve Bartkowski was a rookie. The numbers were originally on the sleeve, but for 1994 they bumped them to the shoulder to make room.

Someone told me on a Saints board that ESPN reported the team was going to wear their 1966 style throwbacks...which aside from the red helmets and some tweaking are pretty much what JG had them wearing in the 90's

Did they really? It would make sense since it is a 1960's era uni, and they are scheduled to play the Jets, Bills, and Pats this year.

Also, I'm in the same boat of wishing that they went with the 1980's set. It's my favorite look.

For some reason I really love the red/black/white look from the 60's. Kind reminds you of UGA's blackout uniform...wait...everything the Falcons used to wear looked like UGA

NOT GEORGIA TECH! WHOS WALKING DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE GEORGIA DOME!! HAHAHA SUCKAS!

Maybe the NFL won't let the team opt to another era like the 80's since the alternates are supposed to be 60's inspired. Saying that, I'm suprised Blank, wouldn't object since the 60's era unis mimic the 90's/Vick era that he fought so hard to get away from. Glanville, basically added solid black socks, a black helmet and changed the pants to achieve his 'Johnny Cash' look!

This would be nice....Dear Lord what am I saying....they are my rivals!

I agree Dub....those were some nice uni's to hate.....No "Big Ben" touchdowns , however....!!

I wished they stuck with those uniforms for a few more years during that time

I've never seen that awkward-looking falcon on the sleeve before! Is it supposed to be in the shape of an A?

I highly doubt that falcon is rendered in any kind of action pose--the wrinkles in the sleeve may just make it appear that way.

And man...even after all these years, it's STILL strange to see Prime Time in that particular Falcons set.

Ah...the days of big pads and actual sleeves...

That must be from his rookie year. I know that that is the uniform he is shown in on his photo at the Falcons HQ in Flowery Branch.

I'm stoked to see the return of the red helmet, even if just for one game. I wish they'd make the current helmet red. THAT would have been a MAJOR clean break from the Vick era.

It would also be nice to see some silver return as well. In any event, hooray for these throwbacks, assuming they are done right.

Actually, they did consider that when they were designing the current set, but they ultimately chose (wisely) the black helmet. The red streaks on the wing just doesn't look good with the red helmet.

Also, here is the link to the official release from the Falcons website.

From the Stinkin' Falcons'* website:

"The helmets the Falcons will be wearing for the throwback game will have the 1966 gold stripes intact."

Sweet. As much as I hate this team, those are some beautiful unis.

Revived because the Falcons equipment manager is leaking pics of different parts of the uniform as of late.

Looks to be pretty accurate so far (assuming that the gold stripe is on the helmet. Can't see from the angle he took the pic in.)

Why in the world they abandoned what was one of the sharpest logos in the entire league in favor of the 'nosedive' Falcon I'll never know.

I've loathed the Falcons franchise since exactly January 17, 1999, but I've always loved the look of those red helmets. I welcome their return, albeit temporarily.

Shouldn't you be loathing Gary "One Bar" Anderson instead? ^_^

And really, this is by far the best freaking year in terms of uniforms the NFL has ever had. I simply cannot wait.

Not "instead." It's "in addition to."

so excited for this! Atlanta seems to never want to wear throwbacks, and they have some of the best.

Braves need to make the red jersey a road/home alternate, ditch the batman unis, and add a version from the Hank Aaron era.

Hawks need Nique Wilkins era throwbacks, or at least an alternate

and the Falcons have never worn a throwback minus the 1994 season.

its about time we mix it up here!
