ANYWAY BACK ON TOPIC who is in charge of the Coyotes right now? Is the NHL in charge of day-to-day operations? Who is signing paychecks?

I believe the NHL is de facto running the team, even if they don't "officially" own it.

So where is the money coming from? The other 29 teams, not Moyes? Delightful.

How soon can the NHL officially buy the team?

As soon as they pony up money for Gretzky and Moyes.

That's the first step, but I'm not sure it will be enough to satisfy the judge. We'll see.

Alright.

Unnecessary kvetching and sniping has been removed from this thread. It will all stop now--even from Lee.

Thank you, and be excellent to each other.

Thanks a lot for not listening to me.

Why this thread is still up even as Jim's bid is rejected is still beyond me.

Because the NHL may yet sell this team to some moneyed individual not named Jim Balsillie who will in turn move it to parts as yet unknown, such as Kansas City, Cleveland, Portland, Las Vegas, Winnipeg, Peoria, Saskatoon, Hamilton, Yellowknife, Monterrey, Jacksonville, or Anchorage.

If had to guess where the Coyotes might end up...I'd say Kansas City,up north to either Hamilton or Winnipeg.

I'm not sure on Portland because of the Trail Blazers though.Otherwise, the other cities aren't capable of

supporting an NHL team at 100% capacity anyhow.

How well does the Rose Garden work for hockey?

Who's this De Facto guy you speak of? Is his money legit? :upside:

I thought "Boots" De Facto already got sent off to prison after some sort of financial scam.

No. It was a porn pyramid scheme.

The Rose Garden works well for hockey, but the Winterhawks only draw an average of 4,500 to 5,000 fans, don't they?

Thereabouts, probably, but it's major-junior. It's a niche thing. They're not going to fill the arena. Even the best teams in the biggest barns (I'm thinking London Knights, Calgary Hitmen) top out at like 10,000. I think the bigger concern in Portland is stepping on the Trail Blazers' turf. I'm sure they'd much prefer to monopolize the sports landscape during the NBA/NHL season.

I'm sure they would... and look at San Jose, Columbus, Tampa Bay, and Anaheim and what they have in common... only an NHL team and no NBA team. Phoenix, Atlanta, and Florida all have NBA teams. In the recent markets, Colorado and Dallas have been exceptions to the rule but in general IMO hockey works better in non-NBA markets.

The Blue Jackets have to contend with Ohio State sports, a far more insidious adversary than the NBA could ever be. If not for the Steve Mason-fueled renaissance of Blue Jackets interest, I'd have feared for them. Weren't there some rumblings of money problems?

True but the competition is really only there on Saturdays during the fall...

Which is why I think that the Jazz are the biggest hurdle to get over if you want NHL hockey in Salt Lake.

Exactly especially in a smaller market like SLC.
