Lake County Fielders

The Lake County Fielders, a minor league baseball team in Zion, IL, and the North American League have vowed to stay together -- with a twist for the remaining 2011 games. The League and its member teams, recognizing the high costs of air travel this summer coupled with a distressed economy, will adjust the current schedule for the remainder of the season, and provide all 10 League markets with the same professional baseball experience at an affordable cost for fans in each community.

For the Lake County Fielders, the plan includes a Monday announcement by the Fielders that the team will play many of its remaining home games against the newly formed Kenosha County Fielders, a team of professional minor leaguers that will challenge their Lake County counterparts when other League teams are not traveling into town. Further details on the Kenosha County Fielders will be announced over the next two days.

"The Fielders and the North American League are taking every creative measure necessary to support this market and stadium project, and keep professional baseball alive for Zion and the surrounding communities," said team spokesman Bernie DiMeo of DiMeo Communications. "We"ll continue what we started -- professional baseball in a family friendly environment at an affordable price. This little minor league team has made more comebacks this season than Rocky Balboa, and we're going to finish this marathon!"

oh bite me you crooks

Also, nice boxing/running mixed-metaphor.

To be honest if it was done right a baseball style of the Harlem Globetrotters would be fun.

What really gets me is the "great fan" stuff. It's sad to think of our country as a "Steeler Nation", because that would mean that we're a country of near-sighted inbreds from the mountains that can't speak competent English.

Let's go Brownies!

So instead of folding because nobody will play them they are going to basically pull fans from the stands to play against for the rest of the season?

That can't be right...

I'm assume Lake County is also disqualified for the playoffs, and by most games, they mean all games. Basically Lake County gets to claim they are still part of the North American League until the end of the season, when they can fold, and nobody will get sued for money they don't actually have.

Zion, IL. The Kenosha Kings Baseball Club has issued a challenge to the Lake County Fielders, a minor league baseball team in Zion, IL: "Never mind the Kenosha County Fielders! We're Kenosha's Team, and we're ready to come down to Zion!"

The Lake County Fielders are playing a modified North American League schedule for the remainder of the 2011 season, with open dates available to play the Kings. If the two teams meet, the Fielders would permit the Kings to supplement their current roster with additional minor league and MLB experienced players.

"The Fielders front office is taking the challenge seriously, and will decide shortly," said team spokesman Bernie DiMeo of DiMeo Communications. "This could be a real County vs. County rivalry. The game of baseball can always use that kind of energy, with some real bragging rights at stake."

The Fielders will announce their remaining 2011 game schedule tomorrow.

I'm having visions. Terrible visions. Visions of trash talk involving the relative merits of football teams, observance of speed limits, and sausage toppings. Dear lord.

The Kenosha Kings never showed up. Probably because they weren't going to get paid. The "Kenosha County Fielders" are in this game instead. So it's like an intrasquad scrimmage except the squad is made out of people who showed up out of god knows where. They probably won't get paid either.

I'm sorry to see that the remains of three independent leagues have degraded to such an extent. Both Lake County and now Maui biting the dust. One completely and of course LC falling into nothing but a WWE with bats farce.

If you're interested in a laugh go listen to their radio broadcast on 1220wkrs.com

The announcer a few times has said something to the effect of "Well he's a right-handed hitter and that's about all I know about him."

He also didn't know about a number change until the guy was on first base.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the NAL next season. They do have some fairly good teams in the league with decent management but also made some poor choices with other teams and management organizations. Having the worst of the bunch, Ehrenriech, out of the league is going to be a good thing in the long run. It's unfortunate for the players and the fans of baseball in Zion and Hawaii, those are the people I feel the most for.

I'd like to thank you all for keeping me up to date on the train wreck that's been going on in Zion for the past year or so. I've been a long time lurker on the board and if I hadn't read this thread, I wouldn't have even believed what was going on behind the scenes with this team.

I got a chance to see the Fielders in action at Silver Cross Field last year in which they wore some of the most hideous uniforms I've ever seen. I'm hoping to head up to Zion in the next few weeks to catch some of this entertainment before it's too late.

This thread was awesome to read during work. Can't believe how awful this went.

The game Wednesday drew 125 on a night when the Fielders played with 9 players, according to ballparkdigest. I believe their only "bench" player was the manager. Supposedly some might be returning for the rest of the best of 15.

Thursday night Lake County lost to Kenosha (which consists of semipro players) 14-6. Wow.

They upped the ticket prices, too. When I went to their last "real" game against Calgary, outfield bleachers/home plate beer garden (great planning there) was $6. Lowest price being offered now is $7.

The NAL says these glorified intrasquad games don't count in the standings. I fail to see how the team can genuinely still be considered part of the league.
