Does Under Armour supply their uniforms now, or is this just a UA item?

I like the logo much better though.

yep, that's the one. i used that thing in some baseball concepts a while back...lemme dig one up. and you basically answered your own question: they were gonna roll it out, but decided against it. which was for the best IMO, cus comparing the two tigerhawk heads, the original beats the newer one hands down. that's not to say the newer head isn't a complete loss, but it's like the Milwaukee Admirals logos: the head is lame alone, but attaching it to a body works wonders for it...like so (body modified from Iowa City HS logo):

edit: here it is...yeah yeah, I know damn near everybody who saw this the first time thought the unis were ugly)

Thanks for the info. Weird that it's coming out on some new merchandise now.

Iowan here, so I can shed some light on that logo. Former football coach Hayden Fry (who is considered a legend in the state of Iowa) designed the original tigerhawk - which is beloved by almost every Hawkeye fan. Several years ago the university was toying with the idea of "updating" the logo and hired a firm that came up with that new one. Response to the new logo was overwhelmingly negative and people were up in arms about the possibility of the original tigerhawk being replaced that that new logo. People referred to it as the "crackhawk" or "heroinhawk" because it looked like the original logo with a drug problem (because of the space around the eye). Football coach Kirk Ferentz and (then) basketball coach Steve Alford said that new logo would never appear on their team's uniforms and the new logo was pretty much dead in the water after that. You can still occasionally find that "new" logo on some 2nd-tier Iowa merchandise, but most Iowa fans avoid it like the plague. Personally, I would never buy any merchandise with that logo on it and I know that a majority of Iowa fans feel the same way. It still exists, but it was never officially adopted by the university and it has never appeared on any Iowa uniform in any sport.

Yep, everyone in Iowa (myself included) hates the new logo.

Wow, you got all three of you to agree on something? (Just joshing you , I know there are like tens of people in Iowa.)

Is it because ya'll feel it doesn't need an update? Miss all the negative space? Is it the loss of the Andy Rooney jowls?

Yeah, it's just the combination of the logo being a classic (and created by one of our heroes), and how silly the new one looks. Many people said it looked like the bird had been thrown into a washer and dryer and came out all fuzzy and unkempt looking.

The origional tigerhawk is an classic. The design of the new one is a bad update.

I do miss the flying hawk that use to be at center court when Carver-Hawkeye Arena was opened.

Can't beat the original.

Wish Wisconsin had been so wise as to leave Bucky Badger alone - their update is much like this "refreshed" Hawkeye - messes with the classic design but doesn't bring anything new.

Original Bucky with ever-so-slightly cleaner lines + motion W = Ultimate Wisconsin Awesomeness.

For the Iowa hawk, too right. While it's a logo that could definitely be improved on the margins, it is simply an excellent logo. I can personally vouch that this is a logo that any child can draw on his Trapper-Keeper at school, and everyone who sees it will know exactly what it is.

The bottom beak could be improved, and the curves of the top of the head, both the top and bottom of that element, could be improved. And on those elements the other logo is OK. But the under-the-eye element is absolutely key to the success of this logo. Radically change it, and it's no longer an Iowa Hawkeyes logo at all. The bulbousness of it, for one thing, sets this logo apart from basically every other raptor's head logo in sports. It looks ornithological, rather than mascotish, which gives the logo a gravity it wouldn't otherwise have. Further, the shape resembles both a football player's eye black and a lowercase I. Plus, the roundness, as opposed to angularity, of that element keeps the whole thing looking like a stencil rather than just a stylized-for-no-apparent reason hawk's head.

The revised logo demonstrates quite clearly both the room for improvement around the edges of the logo as well as the critical importance of not just adding a bunch of supposedly fierce-looking edges to every logo element.

Do you know where I could find a picture of the flying hawk? I don't seem to remember ever seeing that.
