Texas Tech may fire Mike Leach "for cause."

Sure...that's a brilliant move. Let's fire the coach, who has a law degree, for cause when you lack cause as defined by his contract hours before he is due $800,000. No way does that end badly for Tech.

Seriously, I'm starting to understand why their accreditation is in constant jeopardy.

I have listened to Dallas sports radio today and they rarely take calls, but on this issue they have. 90% of the callers were pro-Leach thinking he did nothing wrong and that Craig James has some nerve calling for integrity as he took thousands while at SMU.

Overall, I think that Gerald Myers and the TTU president are tired of his. Here is a timeline of his contract talks from earlier this year. Leach Contract Details

Now, TTU is actually its own university system (like UT and TAMU), with a Chancellor who oversees three schools and a TTU president in Lubbock. The president was hired last year and was why Bob Knight quit. The Chancellor has been there since 2006. Leach's personality was probably accepted while Bob Knight was there, but now is it too much. Plus, now that Tech is back to a 4 or 5 loss team, administration may think that "anyone can do that". Myers could also be out in that he allowed Knight to do things, but everyone else is held to a much higher standard.

I would assume there is some sort of behavior clause in his contract. Those I believe are pretty standard in those type contracts to protect the University against unforeseen actions. Doing something that could get the university sued certainly would fall under that.

Off on another note, pretty good/exciting end to the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando last night. Congrats to the Wisconsin Badgers for holding on at the end.

My main reason for posting, though, is personal (as an LSU fan) and relates to the field condition, and this weird/stupid situation of a having a (lesser) bowl game on Tuesday night on a natural grass field, having it torn up, and then playing a New Year's Day bowl game on it three days later. I mean, by the end of the game last night, huge chunks of sod were coming loose. There's no way that field will be in decent condition by Capitol One Bowl gametime on Friday afternoon....

your thoughts?.....

It is what it is.

He'll get his money. He's an idiot psycho who makes his players do weird :censored: and he needs to go. But I think that about all football coaches so I may be a bit biased. :D

I agree with the move, but shouldn't Tech get rid of the other coaches too since they were complicit? Oh, right...what am I thinking, you've got to have a coaching staff in place so that they can get that bowl game payout.

The Hearing Never Took Place

Before the hearing this morning, Mike Leach's personal attorney, Ted Liggett, received a letter from Texas Tech signed by President Guy Bailey terminating Leach's employment effective immediately.

According to the letter, Leach is in violation of Article Four of his contract. That's the performance clause, which deals with the health and welfare of players.

Liggett tells FOX 34 Leach will be filing a lawsuit against the University "soon."

He got fired before a hearing could take place.

Texas Tech just did what was best for Texas Tech. I still say Leach is gonna find a way to get that $800,000 bonus.

That being said, from a football standpoint, I hope TTU enjoys their return to the bottom of the Big XII barrel, because that's what's gonna happen if they don't find a suitable replacement. The players in Lubbock may have come & gone, but Leach & that offensive scheme of his was the main reason why they were Big XII contenders year in & year out. I hope that they can find a way to keep that going.

Kevin Sherrington from yesterday's Dallas Morning News:

From all accounts, Leach didn't further risk James' health. He didn't order him back on the practice field, anyway. But the disdain he showed for the process contributes to an unhealthy environment on such a key medical issue and mirrors his attitude about injuries in general and perhaps James in particular.

The message from former Tech players who have been in contact with current players and coaches is that James is "soft," a nearly slanderous accusation that is utterly beside the point.

Are some players not tough enough for D-I athletics? Absolutely.

Do some fake injuries? Without a doubt.

Did Adam James have a concussion?

Yes. A doctor said so. No one disputes it.

Except maybe Mike Leach, who made his point crudely. As smart as he is, you'd think he know better than to take on such a hot topic. But his arrogance at times tips the scales.

Leach?s new contract has a termination guarantee of $400,000 (his base salary) for each season left or about 16.5 percent of the entire deal. Tech had proposed $300,000 for each season left. Leach?s previous contract guaranteed him 40 percent left of his remaining deal if he were to be terminated without cause. There are quotes from the Trustees from February which were not favorable.

Texas Tech basically just hung themselves by doing what they did. Letting go of a coach that has brought you to ten consecutive bowl games and who has raised the status of your entire program is one thing, but to let him go without any type of payoff months after signing a huge extension and days before he was due an $800,000 bonus is absolutely senseless. Sure Leach was extremely unconventional, and sure his actions were highly questionable, but look at the revenue he has brought TTU over the last decade. And from everything I've heard, the kid was medically cleared to play by the time Leach did all of this. Hopefully he takes a job with a team who plays TTU annually and absolutely dismantles them every year.

College football players are turning into such pu**ies.

That seems a little too, "by all means necessary" to win. As long as you get the steak, then who cares on how the cow is slaughtered.

If those actions were questionable and violated the terms of his contract in the opinion of the university attorneys, then his removal is warranted. In fact, I would not be surprised that when Leach's attorney hit campus and made his youtube video, that violated something, trespassing to start.

We are not the parents of the players at Tech or at Kansas (in the Mangino situation), so we do not know all the facts. If a settlement is reached, then we will still not know everything. The school is right in saying as little as possible then let it all come out in court.

I have another analogy, but will probably use it later.

For Pete's sake. Another boring ass, way too many of them, useless, bowl game. 28 all between BG and Idaho. We'd really be better off if they had just cancelled this game. Who needs this sad display of college football? :P

This 4th quarter forced me to watch The Weather Channel. So boring.
