quantum
I think coaches being fired after one season can be justified. Ray Rhodes' under performing 1999 Packer squad was a perfect example of such a scenario. That said, the Browns had so much going wrong entering into the 2009 season, how can you not see a 4 game winning streak at season's end as a positive for Mangini? Plus, giving Mangini another season may buy Holmgren time to bring his staff together. "One of my concerns is shysters show up and take advantage of people's good will and generosity". The_Admiral
And no fnz I wasn't being sarcastic. The fact that Mangini got that lousy team to play the way they played over the last 5 weeks is enough for me to think he deserved at least one more season. I said this earlier in the thread; The Browns aren't out a thing by giving Mangini one more season. If it works then great. If it doesn't, they're no worse off than they would have been by starting from scratch after this season.I think the Browns made a big mistake by replacing one Patriots defensive coordinator who failed without Belichick with another one, and they had a chance to right that wrong. By most accounts, Mangini is a draconian putz, and his results don't justify the player backlash. Rob Ryan has a decent track record as a coordinator, though. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

The_Admiral
You know, Eric Mangini looks a little like George Dzundza, and he only lasted one season before they got sick of his crap. Clearly, the key to the Browns' success is procuring a Jerry Orbach doppelganger. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
Saintsfan
I think Mangini probably deserves another season, but I don't think he is the long term answer in Cleveland. Rob Ryan might be? But generally I think the Mangini hire was a poor one for the Browns, and at the time it appeared as such as well! 2011/12 WFL Champions

I don't have the list in front of me but my understanding is the free agent pool of QBs isn't a very deep one. Is Kevin Kolb the answer? Just wondering. Would I dump him for some retread? No, although there is something to be said for addition by subtraction, when the guy you are subtracting is a sour puss who brings other players down. I don't know if Kevin Kolb is the answer. Nobody does. The facts are that they drafted him with a 2nd round pick. You don't spend a pick that high on a player who you envision being just a backup. They saw something that showed them that he could be the future of the franchise if McNabb couldn't come back from his knee injury (which unfortunately he did). Now, they need to make a decision about his future - let him go to start on another team (I'm certain that he could get that opportunity somewhere, even if it's just in a competition scenario) or keep him and turn the show over to him. Personally, I'd turn it over and see what you get. At least Kolb is a competitor, and is hungry. He takes the heat like a man, instead of throwing his receivers, his defense, his special teams, etc. under the bus like McNabb does. He could fail miserably, but if success is ultimately measured by winning championships, then can Kolb really be worse than McNabb? I cannot see McNabb ever winning anything. At least with Kolb, I don't know that he won't win anything. Jigga
I hope McNabb is run out of Philly this offseason, too. And I hope that the next decade of Eagles football is something like the early 70s, 80s, and the immediate pre-McNabb era. Philly fans deserve that fate for at least the next 12 years for having to endure McNabb for so long. On January 16, 2013 at 3:49 PM, NJTank said: Btw this is old hat for Notre Dame. He just needed more time. Like four or five years. He lost to the Bucs. With as much talent as Seattle purportedly has, "injuries" is not a complete excuse. Sure, they never won it, but did you ever think Philly fans that they (Reid and Mcnabb) are the reasons the Eagles keep getting that far? Maybe without them, you'd be one of the other fanbases that doesn't get to watch a playoff team year-in and year-out. I have a hard time believing that the Eagles have made 5 NFC championship games, a super bowl, and the playoffs most years in spite of those two. You can try to explain it to me, but I'm not going to understand.

Having had a front row seat to his tenure in Atlanta, believe me, Seahawks fans, they've done you a favor. I was astounded a couple of years ago when they named him heir apparent to Holmgren. He looked lethargic on the sidelines, sounded apathetic in interviews, and didn't seem to have a grasp on the job. Each season he was a head coach was worse than the last (11-5, 9-7, 8-8, and 5-11 in four seasons).Something tells me that's not the last shocking thing they'll do before next season. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Hasselbeck was the next to go. You can try to explain it to me, but I'm not going to understand.Exactly. Even with a great coach and a great QB you aren't guaranteed anything. Just ask Dan Marino or Dan Fouts. Or Warren Moon. Hell, you can go 18-0 and walk away with nothing. Just ask The Patriots. There are no guarantees no matter how good you are or how good you're supposed to be. Hopefully BBTV will get his wish and McNabb will get run off right to Cleveland. He'd be the perfect solution right now. Get a couple decent years out of him and go find someone in the draft that can actually play the position. Personally, I'd take Philly's run in The Reid/McNabb era without complaint. Come to think of it, I already did. It was The 80's Cleveland Browns. Loved every minute of it and I have no complaints. A Super Bowl win would have been nice but them's the breaks.
