The UFL Might Actually Be A Practical Joke

By Dashiell Bennett

The United Football League unveiled its team names and uniforms this week, just hours before tickets went on sale for games you did not realize were taking place, featuring players that may not exist. Is this really happening?

It might be. Actually, one of the four teams doesn't have a name yet. Florida's nickname is the Tuskers. Here you see the uniforms of the California Redwoods, which are ironic because despite being named after a tree, their team colors cannot be found in nature. Then the UFL commissioner began the press conference by fumbling a football and stating confidently that his league is "different from other failed leagues." In that it hasn't failed yet?

The six-game season will take place during the NFL regular season, under the theory that any standout UFL players could be snatched up by NFL teams. Of course, losing their best players to the better league would render the UFL even more pointless. Nothing about this league makes any sense and the business model will be a real test of the theory of trickle-down economics. Does the NFL make so much money that some run-off could fall to the owners of this league without the big boys noticing? Sort of like what would happen if Roger Goodell dropped a $1,000,000 bill on the street?

Oh, and the owner of the Redwoods is Nancy Pelosi's husband, so the first 500 season ticket holders will probably get to sit on a "death panel."

"If things have gone wrong, I'm talking to myself, and you've got a wet towel wrapped around your head."

Guys, if you checked out the main UFL fansite (uflaccess.com) you would understand why the uniforms are as they are.

1. When the league decided to run 2009 as a "premiere" season and not try for a full league rollout until 2010, they placed games in 7 cities,

so they were not going to name the teams until 2010. They were going to have names like UFL East or UFL New York.

2. So, they started planning the uniforms with no logos, no team nicknames, and no real identities for the teams. The idea is that each team would

in some way reflect the league as a whole. Using a single template and rotating the 5 league colors (lime, sky blue, black, silver, white) among the

teams was to create a single "league" identity rather than emphasize team identities that were not yet in the plans.

3. Fan reaction on the UFL website, and UFLaccess was so negative that the league decided to repent and give team identities to each team.

That is why logos are not ready yet. They were not originally going to be part of the plan until 2010.

4. So now we have teams with generic uniforms, but team names are here and logos are coming in the next month. They will wear these uniforms

for this year alone.

5. At some point between this year and next each team will have the chance to develop a true team identity, perhaps change colors, templates for uniforms,

etc. The names and logos will stay, but the colors and uni's could be very different next year.

So in 2009 we deal with a pseudo-generic set of uniforms, although I like a couple of them quite a bit, and in 2010 we may in fact see a very different

look for the Redwoods (maybe in red?) or the Sentinels (I would push for a very different look, with no lime green, perhaps a faded copper-green like the Statue of liberty).

So, don't judge the UFL too harshly based on these uniforms, they are a compromise between the league's idea of league-based teams for the premiere season, and the fans push for team identities now.

I think in 2010 we will see a very different look to the UFL, and hopefully as many as 8 teams (Hartford and LA are almost shoe-ins, Salt Lake City and Monterrey, Mexico are possible too.)

i am completely OK with the UFL basing the uni colors on the colors in their logo for this season.

people are over reacting about "redwoods, uh they don't have red" well maybe next year they are saving money and making the UFL a identity (people are going to watch the teams for football, not for how they look, and its cheap entertainment, with professional athletes)

-they used a single template

-colors from the UFL logo

-the names are original

Seeing these in person they aren't as bad as on the style guide. The back looks really good and the front would look pretty good too if not for the angled stripes in the box and angled numbers. If the teams come next year with full identity packages, then this plan seems acceptable. And I hope some of the uniforms are way out there. It's a minor football league, the uniforms are supposed to be crazy.

But they really didn't need to make a white jersey for each team, all the colors are different enough where one jersey would be okay.

In regard to this whole "premiere" or "test" year thing in regards to the league, does anyone here remember (or more to the point, is anyone here OLD enouhg to remember) the same situation occurring with Arena Football (before it became the AFL) back in 1987?

They also had a limited "demonstration" season with 4 teams. Each had its own identity, nickname and color scheme (Denver Dynamite, Pittsburgh Gladiators, Washington Commandos, and Chicago Bruisers).

It is what it is.

So you're saying Hyughe (sp?) is going to be running a season off of his credit card?
