BallWonk 2 Posted August 3, 2009 The Ravens made the AFC championship game and have Joe Flacco at the reigns. The Terps football is on the rise beating Nevada in the Humanitarian bowl and would have made the ACC Championship if they would have beaten Florida State. Maryland basketball made the NCAA tournament and beat Cal. The only team I have had to die with lately have been the 12 soon to be 13 straight losing seasons Orioles. So the Terrapins have a football team that's capable of beating a mediocre school in a third-tier bowl game and would have made its own conference final if only it hadn't, you know, lost too many games, and you're like all proud about how great the team is? Um, yay?But back to Terrapins. "Terrapin" is just a fancy way to say "turtle," and back when Maryland took the name, "terrapin" was a commonly used team name in several sports at all levels in several regions of the country. Plus, turtles are reptiles, and so "terrapins" is no more "unique" than, say, "ravens." True, there's no other major team named after a kind of crow. But bird nicknames are a dime a dozen, as are reptile team names.

RollWolfpack 53 Posted August 3, 2009 I'm going to be a homer in saying that my alma mater has quite a unique team nickname, the Cary High School (Cary, NC) Imps. Formerly the White Imps, before integration.
BBM 8 Posted August 3, 2009 The high school I went to had a nickname of Flaming Arrows. Yeah, it's unique but also pretty dumb if you ask me.

BBTV 19,503 Posted August 3, 2009 Maryland Terrapins because no one has ever used a turtle for a mascot before. FEAR THE TURTLE!!!!!The Beloit Snappers say "Hi."/We GET it. You're from Maryland and think the entire state is awesome.I'm just proud to be a Marylander. I live and die with my Terps, Ravens, and O's!That's a lot of dying you do there. The Ravens made the AFC championship game and have Joe Flacco at the reigns. The Terps football is on the rise beating Nevada in the Humanitarian bowl and would have made the ACC Championship if they would have beaten Florida State. Maryland basketball made the NCAA tournament and beat Cal. The only team I have had to die with lately have been the 12 soon to be 13 straight losing seasons Orioles.Wow, that has a ton to do with sports logos / uniforms. Next time you take a five-minute break from staring at the Cal Ripken poster on your wall, just post a topic titled "why my teams rulez." Staying on topic (granted, the topic is just listing the names / mascots of your favorite teams or schools you attended) I submit my alma-mater - the Downingtown (now Downingtown West) Whippets.

njmeadowlanders 162 Posted August 3, 2009 Whoa, I can't believe nobody remembered the:Watersmeet NimrodsIn winter of 2004, Watersmeet suddenly attained national prominence. The Watersmeet Nimrods had appeared on an ESPN national sports channel list of most unusual high school team nicknames, right after the Cairo, Georgia Syrupmakers and the Brush, Colorado Beetdiggers. Three versions of an ESPN promo featured Watersmeet's basketball team. Orders for Nimrod logowear flooded the high school. And the entire team was flown to Hollywood to appear on the Jay Leno show.http://hunts-upguide.com/watersmeet.html

OldRamsFan 103 Posted August 3, 2009 There's a high school team called the Apple KnockersPenn is often called the Fighting Quakers. Despite the Civil War issue, it still seems to me a hilarious oxymoron.
