I admittedly am biased being a Penn State alumnus of Penn State, however I always found the name Nittany Lions to be rather unique.

Also, the Altoona Curve, with the dual meaning is unique in a good way.

Couldn't do this thread though without mentioning the Tonopah (NV) High School Muckers.

I'm going to be a homer in saying that my alma mater has quite a unique team nickname, the Cary High School (Cary, NC) Imps. Formerly the White Imps, before integration.

Lincoln City Footbal Club in England have been the Red Imps for a long time.

Freeport Fighting Pretzels, Freeport High School, IL.

Seriously.

Fighting Pretzels.

I don't care to sift back through this thread, but since we're discussing minor-league baseball in western PA...have the Washington Wild Things been mentioned yet?

Brush (Colorado) Beetdiggers...

Years ago, some friends of mine had a band in Denver called the Beatdiggers -- not to be confused with the Beat Farmers, that great old part band from San Diego...

Here's a real oddball.

Compton Community College's nickname is the Tartars.

Compton High School is... wait for it... the Tarbabes.

Tabor Academy seawolves

Stetson Hatters

Soon to be alumnus of both

What's unique about "Seawolves"? Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, Erie Seawolves, etc.

Montana offers some fun ones, for example:

Belfry Bats

Forsyth Dogies

Hot Springs Savage Heat

Plains Horsemen (girls' teams are "Trotters")

And my favorite:

Chinook Sugarbeeters

My high school was the Broncs. Not Broncos. No "O."
