I wish the piping didn't continue onto the bill, but I'll be more likely to pick up one of these (if the Cubs do it right) than the last version. That's not saying much. Of course, if it's just the normal cap with this piping, I'll pass. But if they keep the white C I might think about it.

That's basically the "Low & Away" cap from 2007. We sold those at the ballpark that season. The front and majority of the bill was red and the rest navy. The piping was white as well. Only difference is we had a second, different logo on the the very front of the bill. It was actually quite popular. I almost picked one up myself but they didn't seem to fit me right.

I think these are better than the previous model but like the last one's I just don't get it. Do they tell Majestic (edit, thanks Oakland Ehs) New Era just do something different so we can sell new ones? Like anything different, we don't care what it is so long as its different. If this is really about merchandising don't they miss a golden opportunity here to release a cap for each team that either uses an alternate logo or an alternate color that fans will actually want to buy. I guess the proof is in the sales figures but I definitely feel that I've seen a lot less people at games wearing the 2007-08 model BP caps than the previous ones.

Does anyone have a history of the 39thirty bp hats (as well as jerseys) since 2003? New Era used to send with their orders posters with the authentic hats on one side and the bp caps on the other, but I haven't gotten one in a while.

Haha that sign uses Copperplate AND Impact. lol reds.

I don't understand why anyone would buy a batting practice cap. What does it accomplish that a plain old hat without retarded piping and inserts doesn't? Are they more comfortable? My wool 5950 is really comfortable.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I generally agree, but BP caps are definitely a LOT cooler than one of the old wool 59Fifty's. Since the change to poly though, there really is no point now that they ditched using alt logos.

The BP caps are more comfortable, IMO. It's too bad they can't make one with a decent style. The different-colored panels above the ears were lame, and the 2010 models look equally lame. What's wrong with a plain-looking cap with an alternate logo?

The original mesh BP's from 1999 through 2002 were unique because they were 5950s with a low crown and usually an alternate logo or some type of stitching on the left side panel. I'll probably be a loser and buy a new one, but I still can't picture designers from New Era and reps from MLB sitting around a table, looking at a slide show of these new caps and saying, "Gosh darn, those caps just look great!"

The BP caps may be more comfortable to you, but if so your comfort is a lucky accident. For one thing, they are very low-crown, and most people have a preference for low or for high crown in terms of comfort, but it's pretty random and based on the accident of the shape of one's head. But more importantly, the BP caps are not fitted, but rather come in, what, 3 sizes and rely on stretch fabric to make a tight fit. Sized garments by definition fit fewer people comfortably than fitted garments; this is as true of ballcaps as it is of dress shirts or pants. I mean, imagine if jeans were only sold in three sizes: S-M, M-L, and L-XL. Nobody would wear jeans anymore, because jeans wouldn't fit anybody. Third, the fact that the caps are stretch-fit makes them actually (but only slightly) bad for your health. There's a reason your Boy Scout first-aid training did not include a session on how to put a tourniquet on someone's head. Restricting blood flow around the head can cause headaches and may (this has not yet been conclusively demonstrated in a study, but the data hints at the possibility) contribute to the incidence of strokes and aneurisms.

Now, I had a stretch-fit hat once that fit me perfectly, and it was one of the most comfortable caps I've ever had. On the other hand, none of New Era's BP sizes even come close to fitting me; I get to choose between a size that literally hurts to wear or a size that's so large that it might as well be a pasta bowl. But there's no way to declare that either the BP or the 5950 are more comfortable. The BP cap will likely be more comfortable to a large minority of people and less comfortable to a small majority of people.

But agreed on the style question. Well, by definition the new caps will be less lame than the old, simply because there's nothing lamer than the ear wedges. However, if they're going to have the BP caps at all, they absolutely should be used mainly for alternate logos and for mixing up the color schemes.

And the only reason I doubt that Mets cap is because it's actually pretty good. Nothing about it sucks! Otherwise, it's a very good view of the elements of the new template, which are quite distinct from even the similarly piped caps New Era has been selling in the last 18 months.
