Richmond Eastern League team's Name-the-Team Contest

This is to add to xylograph's post, here are the reasons why these names were chosen by people who work for the team...

Richmond Rockhoppers (case made by Chuck Domino, Chief Executive Manager): The James River has many exposed rocks that both humans and animals use to cross the river. Thus, the options for the logo and multiple mascots are seemingly endless. Besides all of that, it just sounds good.

Richmond Rhinos (case made by Todd "Parney" Parnell, Vice President and COO): Rhinos are big, strong, rough and they overcome elements in the toughest of climates. Rhinos live long happy lives, plus Richmond Rhinos sounds cool. No one has ever done Rhinos and the merchandise possibilities are endless.

Richmond Flatheads (case made by Anthony Oppermann, Director of Media): The flathead fish inhabits the James River and judging by the response from the fans, the city feels a strong connection to the James as it being a part of its identity. We can also view a flathead as a nail or screwdriver, which would symbolize the industrial history of the city. No need to fish around for another name. Just nail it down with the Flatheads.

Richmond Flying Squirrels (case made by Tom Denlinger, assistant GM): The flying squirrel is a native species of Virginia, thus tying in the great wildlife and scenery of the area. It is nocturnal and since we play 90 percent of our games at night, it makes sense. With its dense brown coat, big dark eyes and a broad flat tail, it mixes the perfect combination for a fun family mascot.

Richmond Hambones (case made by Bill Papierniak, GM): Virginia ham is a staple of the South. Hambones is the best match for a theme beyond the logo and name that the region can easily find that connection and sense of ownership - a vital point in the marketing and merchandising of the team.

Good news from CNBC's Darren Rovell: Plan B. will be handling the design.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/33206550

That is excellent news for the organization. Anyone Plan B works with is very successful. This might be a sign that the front office is taking things seriously.

This is great news, getting baseball back here has been awesome, I gotta get tickets for the home opener.

If you guys ever visit The Clink Room over at the Plan B. site, looks like they'll be showing the behind the scenes process of the logo design.

A much more complete listing than mine, thanks, rvrdgsfn. This morning local media is reporting that a sixth name is now in the running...

Richmond Hush Puppies: Someone not from here evidently believes that this name evokes a southern heritage, and has an obvious and immediate tie-in with a concession item. Of course, Richmond is not known for hush puppies at all, and I'm not sure we want to market our new baseball team as an opportunity to sit around and eat an extremely fattening food item. I've got to believe we can do better than this stupid name.

If Chuck Domino is involved the team will be well ran. He is deeply involved in the Phillies farm system which has experienced a turn around in recent years. The Reading Phillies are one of the best minor league franchises, especially in AA ball, and he worked as their GM from 1988 to 2006.

Chuck is already involved in the Iron Pigs, so why not the Hambones? I like Rock Hoppers and Rhinos personally.

"The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."

Dr. Kelso: My son is a big baseball fan. Not so much playing it, but more the designing and sewing of uniforms.

Tyler: That's neat.

Dr. Kelso: No, it's not.

Hush Puppies??!! Seriously??? RHINOS is still the best one of the bunch! (Richmond doesn't really have any hush puppies served-except at Long John Silver's, maybe)

Don't let this media tomfoolery get you down! KEEP THE SUPPORT UP FOR RICHMOND RHINOS!

Announcement at 2 PM EST today (1 hour from now).

Local media is reporting that the domain name richmondhushpuppies.com is owned by the same company that owns the Connecticut Defenders, which is the franchise that is moving here. Richmond Hush Puppies means nothing to Richmond, but apparently the team ownership thinks it can define the team by selling gobs of hush puppies at games, sort of making it the fashionable thing to eat at a Richmond baseball game. So, if the media is right, the "name the contest" game was a ruse, and Hush Puppies is what the new team wanted to name their team for a while now.

We shall see shortly.

So you wanted a sports alliteration to win out of all the random (and lame) names? The company that owns the Defenders could not come up with any other creative name than Flying Squirrels? Absurdity that is Minor League Baseball.
