Division 1 College Conference Realignment

Eh... I don't think it's the worst idea for Idaho to be independent for awhile, but if they don't at least have some type of plan in place to build a new stadium, they might as well go back to the Big Sky.

University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals jumping from D-II to D-I, joining Southland Conference

School's based in San Antonio-they're hoping this'll fill in the space lost by UTSA's departure.

Is it me, or does the Southland Conference seem to really have its eye on religiously-affiliated schools right now? First ORU (Charismatic), then HBU (Baptist), and now UIW (Catholic)...what's next, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs? Could Dallas Baptist finally go D1 for all sports?

Nope. The Southland has been looking at Abilene Christian and New Orleans as new members (with the latter already in the Southland for tennis)

What we all knew is official-the WAC has announced the 2012 football season will be its last.

Personally, I don't see the WAC going on even as a non-football conference after this year...on top of that, look for the holes in the bowl bids to possibly (by NO means a certainty) motivate the Big Sky to jump up to FBS.

The CAA will probably argue that they deserve to jump to FBS before the Big Sky doex.

What holes? The 10th place team in the SEC needs some place to go.

I really don't see the Big Sky or the CAA moving up at all.

The additional scholarships and the ancillary costs to coaching staffs are an issue. There still is the problem if those schools who have just 14 sports overall rushing up to 16, the FBS minimum.

More importantly, averaging 15,000/game in a two year period will be hard for the majority of their schools to do without major corporate assistance. Each conference has more teams below 10,000 than over at or over 15,000.

Helpful tip for everyone out there: Nothing as big as ND joining a conference would be quiet until it was announced. News would leak out and ESPN would be all over it with their usual "Notre Dame has a press conference tomorrow where they are expected to announce they have joined X Conference." Covering their ass with the "expected" tag yet still stealing the attention and glory for themselves.

Also has anyone kept up with U of New Orleans? Here's how it went down:

June 2010: We're not going to stay D1, we're going D3. Nevermind we're going D2 as an independent at first.

June 2011: Since we're D2, we'll be joining the Gulf South beginning the 2012-2013 school year. We'll have football by 2015.

March 7, 2012: JK we're staying D1.

August 21, 2012: K, for realsies we're joining the Southland.

Well, 'Raysfan12' has an early habit of overstating, then "quitting" the board, yet he faked is demise.

When someone fails to see that from his original story, "Notre Dame president Paul C. Velasco" is not President, he is just a professor in their School of Business, 'Raysfan12' again proved that he does not need to just change his username, rather he needs to live up to his earlier comment and just leave.

I'm surprised it took New Orleans as long as it did to hit the "we're going to D3" stage. IIRC Katrina wrecked the basketball arena.

So in addition to a Big Ten with 12 teams and a Big XII with 10 teams, we have two schools with teams in the Big East and Big West.

You can thank the BCS and the ridiculous poll system for this crap - everyone's trying to climb up the ladder now hoping for one of the limited spots in the favored superconferences, in order to ever have a chance at a national title or at least a decent bowl invite. It sucks, but this crap is going to keep happening until it all gets figured out.

I hated how things went for them when they dropped down. I'd like to see them back in the Sun Belt, but the only way they're getting back in is if the SBC loses some more teams. As of now, 10 football + 2 non-football is a pretty good setup.
