If anything I could foresee a WAC/CUSA merger down the road.  Both conferences are having to dredge up FCS programs and CUSA is going to be gobbling up the programs that the WAC would be relying on for a football rebirth.

Of course, this is with the presumption that there's not more hemorrhaging by, for instance, UTEP somehow getting a MWC life preserver thrown to them.

Why would't the MWC want UTEP? Like what is some legitimate reasoning?

Key word: somehow. Like somehow that Kansas will make the playoff in the next three years.

UTEP was the only WAC charter school still in the league to not get an invite to join the Mountain West in the initial breakaway, and hasn't gotten an invite since despite showing interest in the past.  I'm not going to say "never" but I would be stunned at this point.

Another mouth to feed that doesn't bring anything to the table. Same reason New Mexico State isn't there.

NMSU also has the added "New Mexico has a firm veto on their membership" factor.

That would leave the Southland with only Houston Baptist, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M-Commerce as football members...which brings up the question as to where the Southland goes from here.

Do they try and convince New Orleans and A&M-Corpus Christi to start up football programs?  Do they raid the D2 Lone Star Conference for more teams (so A&M-Commerce can renew old rivalries?)  Perhaps a combination of both?

I know everyone knows how far the WAC has fallen, but for the basis of comparison . . .

WAC Football 1999 --

BYU, Utah, Air Force, Colorado State, Wyoming, UNLV, et al.

WAC Football 2024 +/- --

Incarnate Word, McNeese State, Dixie State, Tarleton State, et al.

Now that you think about it, I think every school from WAC '99 was originally in the RMAC (which is a D2 conference now)...of their charter members, only Colorado Mines remains.

Nothing personal to you, Burmy my man, but my response to that is...

Not even a snowball's chance in hell that will happen at UNO.

Corpus Christi has nowhere to build a stadium either.  The nearest football field currently there is nowhere near FCS levels for seating.

Welp time to create an artificial island.

The most likely option would to build something on the other side of town, and that will cost a fortune due to all the work involved in protecting it. There are plenty of towns in  the area that have a stadium big enough, because . . . Texas. But I don't see that school feeling they need to add it.

And that's assuming the school's not going to be completely underwater in a couple decades.

The best thing the Southland can do is take D2 schools from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana and go from there.

The best bet might be schools from the Lone Star Conference, which is at 18 (soon to be 17 with Commerce making the move to the Southland) members and there are at least 4 schools - UT Permian Basin, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Midwestern State and West Texas A&M - that look like potential D1 additions.

Outside of the Lone Star, there is Central Oklahoma from the MIAA.

at one point they were interested in Texas Southern and Prairie View, but that was unlikely to start with

It's like the Pepperdine of Texas . . . sort of.
