Division 1 College Conference Realignment

The Pac-12 has had so much ineptitude at both the conference and individual school level that they almost deserve to be broken up since they had every chance to stop this and did absolutely nothing.  I'm sad that over 100 years of history and tradition is over because of a few stupid people and decisions and absolute greed from the media companies and certain higher-ups in certain conferences and universities.

It's going to be real funny when we're left with two major football conferences that re-organize themselves in regional divisions. Maybe the Pac-12 is done for, but get ready for the return of the Pac-8!

If it means ending up with a proper playoff, then I am all for it.

I saw, I came, I left.

It feels like it’s been coming already for awhile anyway, but the two dumb SoCal schools defecting to the flyover conference definitely feels like college football’s “jumping the shark” moment. Zero interest left in whatever they have going on there.

Hey the Big Ten isn’t exactly the flyover conference. There’s some major and really nice cities like Madison, Chicago, and the Twin Cities… I mean there definitely are some flyover cities otherwise, but still.

And all of this is really interesting to me as a college hockey fan.  It really doesn’t change much for any of the conferences, and certainly not for the BIG unless UCLA or USC happens to have a really good club hockey team looking to make the jump up. This huge power and money making move is really only going to shake down to football and basketball. Maybe some of the other lower level sports too, but hockey is kinda just gonna keep rolling.

I personally think it’ll be kinda cool to see the Gophers take on UCLA in football or basketball a little more, but it’s not gonna really matter when I’m watching and following the Gophs in hockey.

It’s crazy how different college hockey is compared to the rest of college sports too. Most guys anyways, are coming back from juniors before playing, and are closer to 21 when they start. And both men’s and women’s hockey, (I believe, I saw this as a stat from the NCAA a few years ago) have the highest graduation rate of any spot in the NCAA at like 98%.

I havent been able to place the feelings I have for this but "jumping the shark" is absolutely the right term.

It shakes the foundations of the sport just a little too much.

Pretty much my favorite thing about college football is how it’s always been so compartmentalized. It’s huge, but it’s always been broken down in a manner that makes it all make more sense, and that makes all of these moving parts fit together relatively well at the end. And for the majority of it’s history the attempt was to rectify any potential issues so it makes even more logical sense. It was all a huge, decently well coordinated dance, and that’s what was so fun about it. But in the last decade or so they’ve lost the plot a bit, and now it’s to the point where it’s almost useless to keep up with where everyone is, because it no longer makes any geographical sense. It’s grouped together weirdly, it’s confusing, and frankly, what I really enjoyed about it is pretty much dead or dying. I’m not sure what they’re quite going for here, but it appears they just want some kind of a college super league. Long term I don’t see that really sticking.

Truth is, there are all of these secondary leagues now and due to stuff like NIL, the money just can’t be the same as it was with college football. More than anything, this feels like a nail in the coffin for college football.

DG is right that this shakes the foundations of the sport too much, and I honestly think long term it’s too radical of a change. If anything it’s a sign of how bleak the future is for college football. Probably for the best 🤷‍♂️

Seems like we're headed towards an AFC and NFC (or AFL/NFL,  AL / NL) type situation, where there's B1G East/Central/West, a SEC with divisions, and maybe one other super league, with the others essentially being minor leagues.  Maybe the leagues get big enough that each "division" is some reasonable replication of the teams' former conference.  The B1G map is reminiscent of the NL map after the Giants and Dodgers relocated.

Do "conferences" matter outside of athletics, or are they strictly "athletic conferences" and don't necessarily have any bearing on any academic partnerships?

I think we end up with two major football conferences. So instead of the 100+ member D1 we used to have, it's a new 64-member D1, or Super Best College Buddies Athletic Conference with two 32-team leagues.

It would be funny if it were created outside of the NCAA and all of the other sports -- including basketball -- were left to twist in the wind.

At this point, I'm rooting for anarchy.

For a 64-team division, some schools are gonna have to move down in conferences. The Power 5 currently stands at 64, not counting the 4 incoming schools to the Big XII (BYU, Houston, Cincinnati, UCF). Factor in Notre Dame, that means there will be 69 schools.

Latest word has it that one of the options which has been gaining momentum is for the Big 12 and Pac-12's top schools to merge and form a new 16-team conference...but that option could end up leaving six schools out in the cold.

Don't worry in another 10 years Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame & USC will form THE BIGGER TEN CONFERENCE.

If this happens I hope Cincinnati, Houston, UCF, and BYU somehow get left out.
