Division 1 College Conference Realignment

The Las Vegas TV Market. That's what the UNLV Rebels would bring.... and a decent basketball team.

Personally, this talk of Texas A&M jumping ship scares me a little. I live in Iowa State country and the talk is that the Big 12 dies off, the Cyclones are stuck in limbo until someone picks them up.

Las Vegas is still USC territory, plus UNLV will have difficulty in getting support from Stanford, Cal, and even USC academically. Like it (or aware of it) or not, USC is a school with academic chops and gets research money.

Iowa State is possibly the least desired athletic program from a public university within the current BCS conferences. As a whole, only the private schools like Vandy, Duke, and Wake are at or near the same level.

UNLV is actually one of the leading theatre and arts schools in the nation. Plus, the only other realistic option to have a 16th team would be UNR, and I think they would rather have the LV tv market. It's only USC territory right now because UNLV is not part of the same conference. Trust me, if UNLV joined the Pac-12, their football program would explode (in a good way).

I think the Pac12/Pac16 would rather have San Diego State than UNLV.

San Diego State wouldn't qualify academically for the Pac-12. Plus, they already have the California market, they honestly don't need SDSU. Sand Diego has the Chargers. Las Vegas has much more potential.

If the Chargers move to LA, then SDSU becomes a lot more lucrative. Not sure how UNLV qualifies academically if SDSU doesn't.

UNLV is much better academically than SDSU. The other option would be UNR, which is a much better overall university, but it's in a much smaller market. The ideal situation would be to get rid of WSU and get both.

UNLV is not much better academically...take a look at any ranking, and they are about the same.

WSU holds the Spokane market, which is bigger than Reno.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Not by much, and overall UNR is a much better university than WSU. They are also growing faster (they're one of the fastest growing universities in the nation), and are much more athletically competitive than WSU. They already have UW for the Washington market. They really don't need WSU.

Not trying to be a homer, but you really don't know what you're talking about here.

WSU is ranked higher than UNR in any accredited ranking. Look it up.

WSU already has more students than UNR

WSU has more satellite campuses than UNR

Seattle is not the Washington market. Spokane is big. Bigger than Reno. Spokane is the 75th largest TV market. Reno is 106.

WSU has more alumni than UNR. WSU's alumni donations are bigger than UNR's

WSU's weakness right now is its football team. That can easily change. See 2001-2005.

Yes, and that was the only time Washington State has every been seriously competitive in college football. They also aren't competitive in any other sport except for basketball. Plus, UNR is actually harder to get into than WSU and the students who apply to UNR. The average SAT and ACT scores are also higher for UNR students.

Random thoughts on this SEC expansion talk:

1) Sizemore is correct: the discussion on markets has less to do with where the schools are located (Athens, Fayetteville, Gainesville, College Station, Blacksburg) but where the ALUMNI from those schools are concentrated (Atlanta, Little Rock, Tampa Bay, Orlando, Houston, Dallas, DC area, Baltimore). That's the people with the money and the markets. For example, who in Houston or Dallas right now watches SEC football on CBS? Probably very few folks. Put A&M in the mix, and viewership in those places goes way up - not only when A&M plays, but because SEC games now have a bearing on A&M's fortunes.

2) I'm wondering, with all this talk of the next two being "western" schools (A&M /Mizzou, A&M/Oklahoma, etc.) how will this affect the SEC's divisions (for football, as SEC basketball no longer uses divisions). If the divisions are to remain balanced, adding 2 teams from the (geographic) west would require moving a team from the SEC West to the SEC East. Who would that be? The current eastern-most teams in the west are in Alabama, and although they could remain as each team's permanent opponent under the SEC football schedule and still play each other yearly, it would seem unlikely that anyone would want to break the rivalry.

1. Like I said before...CBS came to the SEC with a 15-year, multi-billion dollar deal. CBS doesn't make this deal because they only get solid ratings in the southeast. CBS makes this deal because they are getting great ratings nationwide.

2. It'll depend on who all joins the SEC via expansion. But if it is two western schools joining first, we'd likely see both Alabama and Auburn move to the Eastern Division, the two western schools come into the Western Division, and Vanderbilt move from the East to the West.

If this is true, why do WSU freshman have a higher average high school GPA (3.42 compared to 3.35), and why did WSU admit a lower percentage of students than UNR? Let's see, is it easier to get into a school that admits 76% of its applicants, or 88% of its applicants?

And according to Collegedata.com, WSU's average SAT score were higher (1770 for WSU, 1750 for UNR, based on upper range of average scores).

Weird.

Well it looks like this is happening. TAMU has moved up their board of regents meeting to discuss conference affiliation and ESPN is reporting to expect a press conference shortly afterwards. Also the quotes from the Big 12 people sounds like A&M is leaving.

No, I would have a "talent" in BS if I wasn't actually good at the piano. But I am.

Just looked it up, and Reno and WSU are about the same. The average GPA is higher for WSU but SAT scores are higher for Reno. I think it just comes down the the fact that one university is growing very fast, and the other is staying stagnate.

And two, where are you getting your statistics? I gave my source. It said WSU's SAT scores were higher. I think you're just giving us another load of BS.

The SEC is also have "an emergency meeting of Presidents" on Sunday to discuss expansion.

But the kicker is when does the SEC approach both CBS and ESPN for getting and additional $20M/team for the remainder of their current contracts. The ESPN deal has what they call 'look-ins', into giving the contract additional money.

If A&M goes to the SEC, then OU, Ok St, and TT go to the Pac-12, who's going to be the Pac-12's 16th team? I was thinking about it, and UNLV would make a whole heck of a lot of sense.

BYU might not be a bad idea. I grew up Mormon. They love their Cougar football. No matter where they live.

Oh boy... Looks like the Big 12 is going to be dead in the water now. Who would of thought that Texas A&M would be the one that gives it the potential death knell?

Average SAT score for WSU: 1590

Average SAT UNR: 1570

I looked at the same source (College Data) you did and you were right. My image for the university might be distorted because UNR has a great music and creative writing school, which is what I hope to in major in.

You might want to try your math again when you add up the three scores, but at least you finally see what the data shows.

And where are you getting UNR is one of the fastest growing universities? Enrollment hasn't really spiked up since 2007.

UNR's 4-year graduation rate is 15%. It's 6-year rate is 48%. Less than half the undergraduates finish school in six years. It's tough to grow when people are leaving.

Undergraduate enrollment went up by a total of 1,300 students over last five years

Last June, the Big XII did not necessarily need Texas, they needed aTm and OU. Both of them were allowed to get more of the share of media revenue (along with Texas) than the remaining seven. All of this was negotiated while Texas was talking about a network. aTm Regent Gene Stallings was all over this last year.

I meant physically growing. Apparently, according people in the area, there are cranes running every day, and they're apparently going to renovate their stadium.
