Winter Classic

As the Winter Classic nears, I wonder if a hockey rink could fit inside a tennis stadium? Or is the total surface (both court and surrounding areas)still to small for a hockey rink? It just seems the rink is too far away for the fans to watch when it is inside a larger stadium/ballpark, and a tennis stadium would be logical fit for an outside game.

I dont know if it would fit, but instead of Yankees Stadium for the 2011 Winter Classic, what about the US Open site? I have to agree with you with the baseball site, there really arent many good seats. The outfield seats are too far away, the lower level behind home plate MIGHT be OK and the seats behind the goal might be OK, but as a hockey fan myself, I like to be at center ice on the upper deck so I can see the whole ice. Bottom line is that the Winter Classic is more of a TV gimmick rather than good to watch in person, but if it works for the NHL keep is going because this is what the NHL needs to keep building popularity...

EDIT: dgthree beat me to it...

In short, no, a hockey rink cannot fit in a tennis stadium.

Now, I can't find exact dimensions for the playing surface at Arthur Ashe Stadium -- probably the most likely venue for an outdoor hockey game due to New York's weather in the winter and it being the most well-known tennis stadium in the United States -- but if you look at this photo of the setup for the Liberty-Fever WNBA game held there in July 2008, you'll see that a regulation basketball court barely fits onto the playing surface.

A regulation basketball court is 96 feet by 54 feet, so the surface must not be much larger than that. And, as previously mentioned, a regulation NHL rink is 200 feet by 85 feet. There's certainly not enough room on the floor of the stadium to make up the difference.

It might be a good idea in terms of making the venue more intimate, but a tennis stadium is simply not big enough.

I heard Brain Burke say something about the BMO Field in Toronto. That would be better to watch than at a baseball diamond. I think rogers centre is where they should play though because for instance...put the Leafs and Habs in rogers centre, you could sell it out. Hell, if you had every leafs and habs game of the year in rogers centre you could probably sell them all out. But is BMO even that much bigger than the ACC? I'm not sure.

Also, it would be cool if a venue was created specifically for the outdoor game. Like say a temporary facility just big enough for the rink and seats on the great lawn in central park. I don't know how viable that is, but it sounds good to me.

I am pumped for the Winter Classic.

What about the battle of Alberta at Commonwealth, or McMahan?

They've already played at Commonwealth so I don't see them scheduling another game there.

I also don't think you'll ever see a Winter Classic in Canada; the point of the event is pretty much getting a high profile game of hockey in front of US eyeballs.

It would make a lot of sense to have a game involving the Rangers (being the last US O6 team not to have played in one). Can't really imagine who they'd play except perhaps St Louis?

I've heard local rumors of a possible Outdoor Classic at Squaw Valley (Home of the 1960 winter olympics) out here in California. That's basically what they would have to do, as Squaw doesn't have an outdoor facility that could seat enough people.

I'm surprised the NBA hasn't looked at hosting a Game in Arthur Ashe Stadium, even if it would have to be withing the first month of the season. That picture of the WNBA game looks like the court fits cozily in there with great sightlines and just enough room around the court of all the courtside necessities.

I highly doubt they would consider a game at Arthur Ashe. It only holds 22,500, and the NHL has already said BMO Field in Toronto (20,500) is too small for a Winter Classic.

I wonder if they would consider using Rodgers Centre with the roof opened? That would certainly be interesting.

Skydome's roof can't be open in winter. Something about the danger of getting ice or snow on the tracks.

At least that's what i've heard...

This. Plus the roof is sealed shut from October to the end of April. The floor of the Rogers Centre is one huge concrete slab, there's no drainage whatsoever, that would be one hell of a hassle if they were somehow able to open the roof, and allow snow to fall to the ground.

The NBA's regular season starts around Halloween. I think it's too late in the year to have an outdoor basketball game. Early October maybe, since it's preseason. The WNBA goes from spring to early fall, so that's why they can play outdoor games during the season.

There has been talks of a second Winter Classic in Canada next year. It would be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary and would feature the Flames against another Canadian team, most likely the Vancouver Canucks.

Here's the link.

yah i was gonna say i dont think they would hold it at a tennis court because of the capacity as well as the dimensions. tennis courts simply wouldnt have enough seats for a winter classic game .
