I still hate that they wear the white pants, which were specifically designed to be worn only with the purple jerseys, with the white jerseys. The side panel mis-match is horrible.

Yeah, but the Vikes haven't looked good in purple pants since Jim Marshall ran the wrong way.

I actually quite like their current white on purple look that they could be wearing.

Same here. Those purple pants are designed to work with that jersey, and should be showcased far more often. Hell, I even liked it when they went purple monochrome for that Monday Night game against the Bears.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

I originally thought that navy pants might work well because the jersey gets a little darker with sweat, but it just doesn't work. The regular blue pants really need to be worn full time - home and away. Scrap the navy all together - the regular pacific blue (or slate blue, puget blue, whatever they call it) would be better even with the green jerseys.

Those all pacific blue home unis are one of my all time favorites. I love that shade of blue with the lime green trim.

Indianapolis Cowboys?

Nonetheless, I'm diggin' this alternate, wasteful or not.

I watched a bit of this game. I'm not sure where I stand on these. They're not inherently bad, but look just close enough to their regular white unis to make it weird. They look like the Colts, except not quite.

With a third jersey or throwback, it's a change of pace. This one was too close to the original.

Game action of the Colts 1955 Throwbacks. Isn't it fitting that the Colts are playing the San Francisco "there is no room for 3 stripes on our sleeves" 49ers? Colts seem to have plenty of room on their sleeves...

LOL This was one of the 1st thoughts I had when I saw the game. Right down to the irony of the two teams.

I'd love to see the Colts combine their past looks to make an updated uni. Perhaps something like this:

I did it myself.

My guess it that this was before TV was widespread and the idea of the sides becoming the "default" place for helmet logos hadn't yet been developed.

Go to The Helmet Project website and look at some of the early college designs... logos were put in all kinds of places until about the mid 60s.

Here's one, though more of a numbering question: Why does Victor Cruz wear #3?

I thought WRs could only wear numbers in the 80s or 10s. Apparently, there's another player on the Giants wearing #2 at the WR position. (Sorry, but there aren't any game pics clearly showing 3):

Well, in the pre-season it really doesn't matter all that much. Now when it comes down to the regular season, then yes WR's wearing 10-19 and 80-89 matter

Some players choose to wear other #s in training camp.

DeAngelo Hall wore his H.S. #2 at TC, then suited up in his usual #23 for the preseason games.

deion started the whole different # on the practice jersey thing and it seems like a hanful of players have taken to this...he always wore his fsu #2 in nfl practices.

also mike williams is wearing #1 for the seahawks which is apparently giving him a shot of youth back to his brief usc days...I'm still baffled how such a physical specimen in college can ruin an nfl career so quickly but I guess there are a handful of athletes who may mature too quickly and peak in their early 20's.

I'm pretty sure I read in Sports Illustrated that Miles Austin wore #2 also in training camp to honor Derek Jeter or somethingAustinSIcover-thumb-250x330-86787.jpg

Players wearing different numbers in TC/practices have been noted over the years, but this was an actual game scenario...not sure any of the above mentioned players actually wore different number in a preseason game.

In the game last nite, two WRs Cruz (#3) and Boateng (#2) wore non-receiver numbers...after some investigating, I found that 80-89 are all taken by current roster players. Only #18 in the 10-19 range is available, with 11,14, and 16 being retired numbers...technically #17 is available as well, but not sure anyone wants Plaxico's number.

Im sure as the team cuts players in the 80-89 and 10-19 number range, both players will have to take new numbers, if they are kept on the roster.

Well, this is the preseason, right? :P

I thought that once you got a number, you kept that number, preseason or not. I then realized that the preseason is largly about who stays on the team and who misses the cut. Once all the cuts happen, then the numbers orders can resume their proper places.

Higher quality shot with the double horseshoe logos visible.

indianapolis-colts.jpg?size=500&imageId=9552802

Can one of you design jedis help me understand why in the world anyone would ever have positioned the horseshoes there on the original uni?

That never made too much sense to me either. Seems as if a bunch of colts kicked them in the back of their helmets. Either way, I'm glad they wised up and put them where they are now.

the league needs to just relax the rules for numbering and adopt something similar to college...doesn't have to be all crazy but positions aren't nearly as defined as they were 25 years ago and when you throw in the trend of keeping so many receivers on rosters we already have the funky teens and 80's numbering which looks totally weird.

some thoughts:

open up the 40's to tight ends full time

let kickers wear any number

let receivers wear single digits

create a position type for several offensive specialist/slot receiver/pass catching rb types (think hester/bush/harvin) that can wear any eligible number

open the 40's for lb's

this is a rough pass but I think the fans would be fine and would probably be easier on equipment managers switching between exhibition and the reg season
