Angels Considering Return To 'california'

The name "Anaheim Angels" sounds really good but if they good to the "Los Angeles Angels" then that sounds good too. Doesn't really matter.

Well, there is a difference between the Angels and LA than the Giants and Jets and NY. The Giants and Jets play 6 miles from New York, where I belive anahiem is about 40 miles from LA.

Oh please, we all know that Anaheim is pretty much a subborb of Los Angeles. It's technically it's own city but when you think of Anaheim and Disneyland, you think of L.A.

San Diego Padres (guess that one's been done)...

And if the Expos move to Portland (God forbid), they can pick up the Portland Beavers moniker...

Another thing I didn't mention but probably has something to do with it is the fact that 'Anaheim' is tied to Disney, both the former ownership and the theme park. Doubtful that anyone other than Disney would have changed the name. Moreno probably wants to distance himself from that...

(On a name change side note, Cianfrocco, R.I.P. to that Bandits cap you use as your sig. That was a classic, IMO, and much better than what replaced it this year.)

I was completely against the change to Los Angeles before I saw this, but now I'm thinking a change would be good. I mean, if I was the owner, I would definantly want to distance myself from the old ownership. If this does go through, what would it mean for the logos, etc.?

The logo's probably would stay the same, the A would be for Angels and not Anahiem. They would probably add an Los Angeles script, or they might keep Angels on the road like Baltimore does. The logo's aren't Disney-esque (sp?), the changed tem when the team was put up for sell, so I wouldn't think they would change them.

That's good to alienate the fans in Anaheim then. Like ICS said you really can't call them California because there's 4 other teams in the state, it wouldn't make sense. But I have friends in Anaheim, and they were so happy when the Ducks called Anaheim home because it was a "team of their own" not an LA team that relocated to Anaheim. Disney changed it to Anaheim when they bought the team and brought out the periwinkle look, (which was ok but needed to be changed back), I don't know why they would do such a thing. To go from Anaheim to Los Angeles seems like a spit in the face for the city saying they're not good enough to be part of the name of a MLB team.

California Angels is still the best name the franchise had, or could have. Unless they move to L.A., what do you have? Anaheim or California? If it was me owning the team, I'd slap "California" on those jerseys in a hearbeat, and to hell with what the other CA clubs or their fans think.

Sorry to bring this thread back from near-death, but I'd been searching for confirmation in print of some of the things I stated. Although I couldn't find the old stuff I got the info from, Scott Miller at CBS SportsLine wrote a new column that references some of it, including:

"The Angels are red, hot and new. And by the way, don't use that word "Anaheim." They are so over it, like last year's sneakers. Just call them the Angels. In visionary owner Arte Moreno's eyes, it's all about building a brand. "

...and...

"The club's new, larger vision is clear: All of Southern California is up for grabs, including Los Angeles.

The name Anaheim has been stripped away from almost everything to do with the organization. It no longer appears on the Angels' road jerseys, website, tickets or pocket schedule.

Furthermore, the club's current advertising campaign includes 18 billboards throughout the greater Los Angeles region, including giant outdoor advertisements at a handful of key Los Angeles locations: Hollywood and Vine, Wilshire Blvd., Ventura Blvd. and near the Los Angeles International Airport on Interstate 405.

The billboards tout the "The A Team", which not only is a reinforcement of the Angels' "A" logo with a halo above it, but also a not-so-subtle intimation that, just perhaps, the Dodgers might be ... Southern California's B team?"

Cosidering the state of the Dodgers right now, it's a smart move for the Angels to go after the LA market. I never liked "Anaheim" for the name, anyway, because of the whole Disney tie-in. Still, they might not bother changing that, opting instead to completely ignore it. Personally, I would like to see them use "Los Angeles", "California", or even "Southern California" (even though the latter won't happen because of USC). Hey, how about "Golden State" ?

I don't necessarily know that they are looking to dump "Anaheim." They are probably contractually bound to keep the city name in exchange for the stadium deal, however that's not to say that they won't try to pull a "reverse-Cher" and simply try to go by one name - the Angels. Yes, officially they are the Anaheim Angels, however when the team markets itself, it will only use Angels.

That's a sweet look. Did you try a navy blue hat with red brim? I figure if you're going to go back to the original name of the franchise, you might as well go all the way with the color scheme.

Those old-school Angels unies of the sixties and seventies are what I've termed "good retro". Heck, the 70's Angels unies even used the Red Sox numbers, so they must have done something right!

Or the OCA's for short! I think we're on to something....a cross between Orange County Choppers (yes I know they are in NY) and Hells Angels. Ties the biker market, then with the popularity of the TV show, more sales! The OC Angels. DO IT!

Simple, because they don't play in LA. I don't mind the name Anaheim. They've had more success with that name, i.e. World Series than Los Angeles, or Calipornia.... er .... California.
