Droost
While Aztecs sounds good and brings to mind the history of LA soccer, I'd have to go against it. With the Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps, Earthquakes using their NSAL names, along with the possibility of Montreal using Impact when they come into the league, I think it is time for MLS to stop reusing these minor league soccer names.Keeping with my Euro+US naming scheme: I would prefer a unique name such as L.A. Athletic, They would have to get the rights from San Jose owner but still think it is plausible........
The_Admiral
L.A. Athletic sounds like a chain of gyms, none of which even operate in California. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
Brian in Boston
I would prefer a unique name such as L.A. Athletic, They would have to get the rights from San Jose owner but still think it is plausible........Lew Woolf doesn't hold the trademark rights to the word Athletic or Athletics. The ownership group of the Oakland Athletics - of which Woolf is a principal - holds the trademark to their team's current name, as well as Philadelphia Athletics and Kansas City Athletics. The entity that would put the kibosh on L.A. Athletic is the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
FirearmofMutiny
I like AC, but only if they move to Washington, DC.I've said all along, if Minnesota gets a MLS team, they should name it Athletic Club Twin Cities. Same concept.
fishheatcats
I realllllllly hope this is true. CUSA has been neck and neck for stupidest name in pro sports since the team's inception. Hopefully they leave Red Bull NY as the lone idiotic name in MLS. I would like them to use CD Los Angeles, or failing that an original name.Of course ideally I'd like them to move, even if just to San Diego, because I absolutely despise the concept of putting two teams in the same sport in the same city, especially in MLS. You have a massive land area to try and reach out to in the US and Canada, and only 16 teams. It makes no sense to have two in the same market. There are plenty of MLS-capable markets who have never had a team, or have had teams and had them taken away thanks to a bum owner(Fusion) or no owner(Mutiny). Cry derby all you want but there are plenty of great rivalries in North American pro sports, 99% of which involve teams located nowhere near each other. Get this team out of LA and into another market. Flight 19 ::: Fort Lauderdale Soccer Supporters ::: DEFEND THE FORT!

speedy
Forget the rebrand. I know this is wishful thinking, but start the relocation rumors!I personally am a fan of having two teams in LA, and hopefully two teams in NY....... Relocation shouldn't come into consideration because there are far worse clubs attendance figures than Chivas. EX. Dallas. If relocation would happen I would have to go with Dallas and New England as the two possible candidates.....But with Garber's plan to cap the teams @ 20 for at least the next 5 years its probably not gonna happen. With Montreal expected as 19 and New York City as 20 that should be it, unless St. Louis can show tremendous fan interest in their NASL/USL club to warrant a team moving........Well the X-factor is if the fans who have supported Chivas USA will support the rebranded name with such enthusiasm. FC Dallas is not relocating despite attendance woes, which has to do with the team performing miserably the last few seasons.Interesting, I've heard that Kraft is in preliminary stages of building an SSS for the Revolution in Somerville, but haven't read anything lately about that situation.I'm not sure how credible this is, but whe you continue to browse mls-rumors.net, you'll notice that the rights to the New York Cosmos brand had be sold with the intent to make a traveling all-star soccer team, similar to the Harlem Globetrotters. So as much as I'd like to see a true NYC club (and named the Cosmos as well), there might be a few stumbling blocks along the way for that to happen.- SSS Kraft rumors have been going on for years, and I will take a believe it when I see it approach. = W/ regards to the Cosmos as Globetrotters, as I stated in my first post MLS-Rumors is not the most reliable source and without a credible secondary source to verify the info, I would take it with a grain of salt. - While the Cosmos would be the ideal name for a club located in NYC, it is not necessary, and if the Wilpon's get the correct financing (Beckham?) I would expect a team w/i the next 5 years located in Queens...QFT. The SSS in Somerville won't happen. Not at the inner-belt location they're pushing for. Many plans for developing the area have come and gone. As much as I'd love to have the Revs playing down the road I can guarantee they won't. A perfect storm of the new subway connection and a stadium in the area would be a great fit, however this city is too ass-backwards for it to happen. It ties LA's previous pro soccer history and the club's own ethnic heritage. ...otherwise LA Azteca could work....but if LA Azteca would still have trademark problems, LA Allianz/Allianz LA (they could use both) would be my choice. Whatever it is, I hope they keep something that marks it as a Latino club. Honestly, I think being associated with CDG was holding them back. This club could potentially be to the Latino community what Notre Dame football was to Irish folk in the early 20th century.
Don
I like CD Los Angeles myself. Identifies itself as a Latin club and people will actually know where they play now. Amazing. Waffles
I second Lee's Chupacabras idea. It's a vaguely snarky tribute to the Chivas name, and a woefully unused sports team name in its own right.
hawk36
No Chivas? How about Johnnie Walker USA? (ok bad joke)Alright so I know I'll get hammered for this but, honestly, I'd love them to simply be called Los Angeles. Let the name/mascot remain un-official and come from how the teams plays and what its fans choose to associate with them. Athletic Club Dark Clouds. Duh. Athletic Club Twin Cities isn't bad but I love the logo for the new minnesota NASL Team:NSC Minnesota is unique and with the fans adopting the name the Stars fits all the UK Nickname requirements.W/ Regards to using Carson as a tag line, Are Americans ready to accept the "Carson City FC" concept??????????? It doesn't necessarily adopt latin culture which I think the new team name should but I think it actually works......

Droost
After Trolling on the BigSoccer Forums, it appears that the fans are adamant that Chivas USA is here to stay, and the sponsor is the only thing that is going to change for the upcoming season. Still doesn't explain the trademark issue though..........Taking an idea from the comments on MLS-Rumors - PanAmerican AC isn't the worst name in the world, not great but I dont hate it. That would be 9/22(assuming ATL/TB is 21/22) teams that use the exact names as their NASL/USL counterparts. Unoriginal and boring in my opinion.Having said that I do find the Charleston Battery to have the best & most fitting name around and would be crushed if they changed it even though a move to the MLS is out of the question.
