GFB
I second Lee's Chupacabras idea. It's a vaguely snarky tribute to the Chivas name, and a woefully unused sports team name in its own right.Haha.Las Cabras = The Goats. That should be vaguely familiar to you, really. It is.. oh, it is. Gothamite
You could call it promotion but when you have: Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps, Earthquakes, Aztecs, Impact/Olympique, Cosmos - it is starting to resemble the NASL/USL taking away from an original MLS identity.......Only in the minds of hard-core soccer fans, which is exactly the market that MLS needs to attract and retain. gosioux76
I'm having trouble reconciling this Chivas rebranding rumor with the fact that NOBODY in the mainstream press appears to be writing a word about it. Understandably, domestic soccer isn't necessarily a headline grabber right now, but there's enough soccer reporters at major U.S. newspapers and legitimate U.S. soccer bloggers out there who would have something by now if there was truth to it. Google news searches in the last two days generate one mention of the Chivas issue, and that was by someone commenting on a Washington Post soccer blog post.If it is true, my vote goes for the Aztecs. I like the flavor of the old NASL.
-kj
Athletic Club Twin Cities isn't bad but I love the logo for the new minnesota NASL Team:We had a thread about that when it was unveiled. I'm a supporter of said team... but that's a gross crest. So many problems. To try and get back on topic, I'm still confused about this. The team doesn't own its name and colors? powersurge
Put another vote in the hat for "Aztecs", "Azteca" or anything related to Aztecs. Thats what I would prefer, though as someone mentioned the name is owned by someone else at the moment. I hope they don't try to go the FC or AC route because it is getting a bit overdone IMO. I hope they don't try to go the FC or AC route because it is getting a bit overdone IMO.I wholeheartedly agree with the "FC/AC" prefix/suffix (hear that, FC Dallas?). Also, I'm glad to see certain teams give a respectful nod to the late, great NASL, but it's time for the appearance of original names again (I like the Philadelphia Union's name - very American!). Getting back to the ex-Chivas, maybe a single name like "Aztecs" or "Aztecas" would suffice, much like the New York Cosmos went by just "Cosmos" for a number of years in the NASL, or the "Hawaiians" team in the old World Football League.ColorWerx, I wasn't aware of that particular logo. Not bad, although I thought the red billy goat beard was a flaming tongue. Like my original (and sarcastic) post before, just add the word "Rams" to the logo, and Bob's yer uncle! --Larry
FiddySicks
I've said all along, if Minnesota gets a MLS team, they should name it Athletic Club Twin Cities. Same concept. Athletic Club Dark Clouds. Duh. Athletic Club Twin Cities isn't bad but I love the logo for the new minnesota NASL Team:NSC Minnesota is unique and with the fans adopting the name the Stars fits all the UK Nickname requirements.W/ Regards to using Carson as a tag line, Are Americans ready to accept the "Carson City FC" concept??????????? It doesn't necessarily adopt latin culture which I think the new team name should but I think it actually works......Would the team be moving to Carson City, NV? Because if not, calling them Carson City anything wouldn't be smart. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) My biggest fear w/ using the Aztec or Azteca names is for those not familiar with the NASL most Americans would equate the name with a Mexican Restaurant Chain...... After a scan on the USPTO's website, The name Aztecs appears to be dead as a TM, and therefore Chivas USA should be able to use it but I could be wrong.....Furthermore, I really have no clue what is going on w/ the rebranding, because one would think if the owner is not able to use the name the website would cease operations immediately and that is not the case w/ Chivas USA........ AJM
While Aztecs sounds good and brings to mind the history of LA soccer, I'd have to go against it. With the Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps, Earthquakes using their NSAL names, along with the possibility of Montreal using Impact when they come into the league, I think it is time for MLS to stop reusing these minor league soccer names.Keeping with my Euro+US naming scheme: I would prefer a unique name such as L.A. Athletic, They would have to get the rights from San Jose owner but still think it is plausible........Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps fall more along the lines of promotion into the MLS rather than the league resurrecting the names...while using Aztecs would be resurrecting a former team name it bring with it a strong history of American soccer, much like the Cosmos. You could call it promotion but when you have: Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps, Earthquakes, Aztecs, Impact/Olympique, Cosmos - it is starting to resemble the NASL/USL taking away from an original MLS identity.......When MLS branches into the Southeast, and Atlanta and/or Tampa Bay eventually get a team one has to expect Apollos / Rowdies to be the front runners. That would be 9/22(assuming ATL/TB is 21/22) teams that use the exact names as their NASL/USL counterparts. Unoriginal and boring in my opinion.Having said that I do find the Charleston Battery to have the best & most fitting name around and would be crushed if they changed it even though a move to the MLS is out of the question. It definitely is a balancing act of developing the MLS as a league and a brand while still allowing ownership groups/teams to create a new identity or keep one that has NASL/USL history behind it. I'm glad that Seattle, Vancouver, and Portland are all keeping their names/identities and the fan followings that come with them.I guess since the Chivas USA ownership group has no affiliation with the Aztec name/brand I'd like to see something original, but until that surafces I think the name would work. Red Wolf
I realllllllly hope this is true. CUSA has been neck and neck for stupidest name in pro sports since the team's inception. Hopefully they leave Red Bull NY as the lone idiotic name in MLS. Red Bull is easily worse, but Chivas USA is (or was?) really bad. Even worse than Real Salt Lake and the Crew.
