College Football Uniforms 2010-2011

Bravo to whoever connected the 1994 Niners' throwbacks to the onslaught of college copycats.

Question is did the team have those shadows in the original uniforms from way back when? Hmmm.

I was flipping through Phil Steele's football preview and realized the drop shadow still remains in rotation:

Oh and I wanted to make a list of the 5 worst uniforms as of 2009:

1) Cincinnati

2) Maryland

3) Texas Tech

4) Berkley Bears

5) Colorado

Each painfully more attrocious than the next. I hope at least one of them will revise for '10.

One more late '90s Nike drop shadow--BYU (and unnecessary addition of black trim):

steve-sarkisian.jpgitula-mili.jpg

The interesting thing about BYU, is to my knowledge they were the first school to do a dropshadow in the 1994 Copper Bowl vs. Oklahoma. The dropshadow was originally denied by the NCAA for that year, but then BYU appealed and won and began the dropshadow mania.

you can thank the '94 49ers throwbacks for fueling that trend...drop shadowed numbers are really cool in moderation but like most trends in cfb everyone jumps on the bandwagon until the next big design trend comes along.

Yep, oddball is right that BYU played the entire 1994 season with a black outline on their uniforms but no drop shadow. And of course, BYU added the drop shadow in the bowl game as a nod to BYU golden boy Steve Young and his throwback 1994 49ers. While the black was unnecessary, I actually like the uniforms as well, because they represent my first few years at BYU.

don't forget the stripeless pants that we're a 90's must have (especially a dark version)...also I'm 99% sure that those jerseys were actually made by champion with a nike logo slapped on...I'm pretty sure the fist couple of seasons they got into football uniforms they weren't even doing design or manufacturing for the majority of the teams they were sponsoring...I'm pretty sure adidas also did the same as I've seen photos of game worn nebraska jerseys with the adidas logo on the shoulder with a russell tag.

That's something I forgot about those BYU uniforms, the stripeless pants. I tend to dislike stripeless pants, but looking at those uniforms, there's something nice and clean about them. I also like the information from Mingjai about why BYU added the dropshadows. I had never heard they did it in respect to Steve Young. Kind of a cool idea.

Although I do like what they're wearing now:

Would be much better if it wasn't for the random silver. And they should return to orange pants.

I would think the grey is used instead of white just to make the players a little harder to see on the blue field. That's the only thing I can think of. I do know it looks like crap though.

They still do wear the orange pants. They wore them against TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.

One more thing about this uniform before we move on:

1995 was the first full year of BYU wearing this set. During that year, BYU played an ESPN Thursday night home game against SDSU, during which BYU was forced to wear blue jerseys and blue pants for the first time in the LaVell Edwards era because the white pants didn't get washed in time. From then on, BYU used 4 combos for the rest of the year: blue-blue, blue-white, white-blue, and white-white (also a first in the Edwards era).

In 1996, BYU opened with an upset over A&M, and then traveled to Seattle to play Washington. Before the game, there was apparently some bickering among players over what socks to wear with the white-white uniform (Itula Mili, pictured). BYU ended up losing the game (unfortunately their only loss on the way to a 14-1 record and a #5 final AP ranking), and Coach Edwards put his foot down and said no more monochrome look. From then until the 1999 complete redesign, BYU didn't wear the monochrome look.

 took the words right out of my mouth.

They have been using shadow numbers since 1998 when John L. Smith arrived. When they first unveiled them for their "Black Out " game, that was what I said. If Kragthorpe added that to the uniform that was I think one of the final nails in the coffin for him here. Louisville is cool on the uniform but that nickname!?!? Like putting Da Bears on Chicago's unis. Besides if you're going do a black out uni MAKE IT ALL BLACK!!!!! DUHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

On a side note the only thing I have seen as a change are their facemasks are white instead of red. Charlie Strong is trying to make little changes here and there. Who knows he may try changing their unis to a closer Florida template. Probably would help.

It was the first time with the new set and was just for the TCU game. Sorta like UGA's black britches in the '98ish Outback Bowl. I like the Blue over orange look alot. You'd think they'd wanta keep the look (color wise atleast) of the game that reeally put them in the spotlight and what I believe to be the best football game ever.

Some pics of the new MSU helmet (don't know if this has already been posted)

^ Looks like the stripe is actually two separate stickers... Interesting.

Also interesting that they used that jersey, as that was originally listed as the alternate, with the normal home having bronze trim/white shoulders. I wonder if they changed their minds again?

I hope they have...the white shoulder trim/yoke thing + bronze trimmed numbers w/ those notches would have = teh suck. If they stick to what's in that picture, I'd be cool with that (although that "STATE" still looks rather unsightly).

Is the helmet stripe supposed to be the thingy over the helmet in the logo? I always thought they should do that. That's odd how the stripe is two stickers like GFB said, why couldn't they just have one long one?

I think you're talking about the feathers on the top of the spartan helmet. Why two stripes? Simple, with a decal that thick and then it shrinks down, you will have bubbles as it won't lie flat on the round helmet. It's easier to place, and besides, they will have to replace them each week, so why put a complicated decal on, when you can just replace the part that been destroyed that week during the game?

One long stripe leaves air bubbles so you have to make slits.

Or you could just apply it properly.
