2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

I'm glad the World Cup didn't end in a shootout

Why is Spain changing into their red jersey?

And Spain just became the first team to win the whole thing after losing their first match.

Man, these announcers are absolutely SLAMMING this game, and the Netherlands. Like, they're pulling absolutely no punches. That's kinda lame if you ask me.

BTW, why is the World Cup not an actual cup?

Because the kit had the star.

And we end with FIFA sponsorships, as the women holding the medals are actually Emirates Airlines cabin crew (flight attendants) in uniform.

Because the red jersey now sports the star atop the crest.

Spain changed into the reds because theyre the Furia Roja. The picture hoisting their first cup in navy would just be lame.

But the end got sketchy, congrats Spain.

The original trophy was a cup but it was retired in 1970 when Brazil won its 3rd World Cup.

That's gotta sting for the Dutch to see Iniesta, the man who gave the Dutch at least three yellow cards by flopping, score the cup winner. Ouch!

I'm devastated.

Sneijder's free kick, clearly went off a Spanish player would have gone for a Dutch corner. Maybe wouldn't have led to that goal.

Anyways this is gonna hurt for a long time.

Congrats Spain I guess.

This is going to be a LONG post, so if you want the cliff notes, scroll down past the wall of text. :P

Congrats to Spain for winning the World Cup! They've been dominant since 2008 when they won Euro 08, & even moreso during qualification (I'm not going to count that one slip-up against the USMNT in the Confederations Cup.), & it culminates in them pulling the Euro Double: Winning the Euro Cup &/or World Cup one after the other. Very great accomplishment for La Furia Roja.

Poor Oranje. Another World Cup Final, another painful defeat. The last 2 came in the home stadium of the host team, & this one comes in ET against the best team in the world. Still, nothing to be ashamed of for Oranje. They tried their best, & had themselves a hell of a campaign from qualifying until now. I can't wait to see them shake that label of being the World Cup's Minnesota Vikings. :P

As far as the game itself...it was decent quality. It was end-to-end at times, & athletically both teams were showing exactly how soccer can be played at the highest level. It wasn't pretty though, but hey, it's a World Cup Final, not a 3rd place game. It's not going to be wide open when THE FREAKING WORLD TITLE IS ON THE LINE, compared to the other game having a bronze medal on the line. It had me captivated, though.

So I guess I'll post what I learned:

***Never doubt the Europeans. Yeah, South America dominated the World Cup from the first week of play to the quarterfinals, but there ended up being 3 Euro teams in the semis & those Euro teams ended up finishing 1-2-3. They may not have shown it earlier, but Europe is still the best footballing continent right now, IMO. Not by much, still. Just imagine if Brazil or Argentina were on their "normal" game.

***Always doubt the African teams. Yeah, the continent is chock-full of stars...but until they have consistent coaching & identities, African nations as a whole won't go deep into the World Cup.

***STOP OVERRATING THE USMNT. I had to think about this: The US debuted in the first World Cup in 1930, made it again in 1934, didn't make it back until 1950, & didn't make it back until 1990. As a nation, we've started to get complacent with the fact that the USMNT haven't missed the World Cup since then, & occasional upsets & usual US media overhyping have got people thinking that this team should be better than it is. This is EXACTLY where they should be. They've somehow gotten into 32-16 tier of int'l soccer, & a Round of 16 finish in the World Cup is basically what we should've expected & that's what we got. Hell, the USSF didn't even start to get serious until the late 80s when they realized that they could have a chance to host the World Cup, so to be real, we've only been "in the game" for like 20 years & the fact that we've gotten this far is a miracle in itself & a testament to having an actual league & system dedicated to help growing players in the US, instead of having the NASL just for entertainment value.

To have the expectation that we "should" beat teams that eat, breathe, sleep, & dream of soccer only because "HURR DURR, WE'RE THE USA, WE WIN AT EVERYTHING ELSE THAT'S IMPORTANT, NO EXCUSES FOR LOSING AT THIS, HURR DURR" is kind of ridiculous. Yeah, the USMNT is strong in the midfield with Donovan & Dempsey among others, but our forwards are still green as hell & our defense still has leaks. As long as we continue to develop players on both sides of the ball & continue to build around the midfield play, the USMNT will be fine in the years. But once again, if you ever hear the US media try to overhype this team, just remember "We may be a top tier nation in other sports (that most of the rest of the nation actually cares about :P), but until these breakthroughs against teams like Spain, England, & other teams that the USMNT have had the luck to upset in the past, we are middle of the road when it comes to soccer."

So yeah, stop buying into the hype surrounding the USMNT, actually do some research & try to follow this team when they are qualifying or playing in the Gold Cup or other competitions so that you can have an accurate opinion on the team, instead of basing it on every 4 years.

***ESPN did a damn good job. Yeah, I had a little bit of a go at ESPN for overrating the USMNT...but overall they did a great job of covering it. I love the fact that they had recap shows immediately after, in-depth highlight shows during primetime, & tried their damndest to cover it from every angle. The website was great, ESPN3.com was a LIFESAVER, & their coverage from the magazine to the TV was just miles better than when they covered World Cup 06 & Euro 08 by just keeping their studio guys here, basically streaming the game from the international feed, & sticking the announcers in a closet and in front of a TV & have them call the game from there. Plus, the announcers were great. Ian Darke was easily my favorite, so many quotes. :P So yeah, normally I like to hate on ESPN for their coverage of other sports...but at least when it comes to college football & basketball, & now soccer, nobody can beat them when it comes to coverage.

CLIFF NOTES: Congrats to Spain, too bad for my Oranje, Europeans proved they're good at soccer, South Americans proved that they're almost as good at soccer as the Europeans, Africa needs more structural help if they want to win, people need to actually follow the USMNT in between world cups instead of buying into the hype, & props to ESPN for great coverage. Sorry for the long post, I've been holding this in for a few weeks now. :P

I'm gonna miss the World Cup. :P

Either that, or disappeared until next April when he'd suddenly turn up on the ice at Joe Louis Arena. :hockeysmiley:
