2010 LeBron James Sweepstakes

Yeah, but the history of #99 in the NHL would probably stop that, even without a mass retirement. Just saying.

Always thought retiring #99 was a desperate cry for attention from a sport that didn't have enough confidence in itself.

Best player to play the game by a large margin gets his number retired league wide? Not seeing the problem.
It's a busher move from a league unsure of its own relevance and desperate to prove something. The same kind of league, in fact, that would expand to places disinterested in the sport just to claim some sort of "national footprint".
I'm not seeing the connection. Yeah, the NHL does some stupid crap that reeks of insecurity, but I don't see how honouring the greatest player in the sport's history ranks among them.

And to reinterate my above point, I grew up playing hockey in the most hockey crazed part of the planet. The kid who wore 99? Everyone always rolled their eyes at him. I doubt anyone would have worn it again after Gretzky regardless.

All I know is that LeBron is going to be upset to find out there's no more train station or downtown, reduced to parking spaces.

Well, arguably, yeah, they were. However, they didn't have the same career or legacy that Jordan did. It's not just how well you play -- it's also how much you grow the game. Jordan and Gretzky are the only figures in their respective sports that had a comparable impact.

Magic helped set the stage for Jordan, but it just wasn't the same.

LeBron went back to Cleveland. He didn't go to Phoenix and the Suns didn't move to Jobing.com Arena.

Russell, Magic, and Wilt were all arguably just as good as Jordan was.

um what no

I will argue for Russell and Wilt but Magic? I'd put Kareem over Magic.

I wonder if he'll go deaf and develop an addiction to OxyContin, too.

...said absolutely no one before the sucky athletic-industrial complex sports world that we live in today. I suppose Babe Ruth really wasn't that good, because there weren't any West Coast MLB teams until 20 years after he retired? Sure.

Oh, no! Nobody post here! Must be reserved for Gretzky! :P

If some kid in high school wore 99 he'd be rightly ridiculed for being a chode.

I mean Gretzky was dominant. You have people who can debate whether or not Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. Gretzky though? Hockey collects goal, assist, and point statistics, with points being a combination of goals and assists. Not only does Gretzky walk away with all three but he'd still easily hold the all time points record without a single goal to his name. That's how good the guy was. So when some second liner in high school wants to wear 99? It just comes off as eye roll worthy.

So I really doubt anyone would want to wear it anyway just due to the scrutiny. It was a unique number that Gretzky not only made famous, but one he wore as he rewrote the record books. Anyone else would be ridiculed for having the audacity to wear it because come on. You're not Wayne Gretzky. What the hell are you doing?

I know the NHL does a lot of stupid crap, partly out of their own insecurity, partly out of general incompetence. I'm really struggling to see how honouring the greatest player in the game's history qualifies for either.

I don't get what the fuss is about 23, if they want to retire it, sure go right ahead. I really don't care about either end of the spectrum. I get why the NHL retired 99, and I get why the MLB retired 42, I'd get why the NBA would retire 23.

For the record, page 99 ended after this post. Gretzky has become more powerful than we could have ever imagined.

FWIW, I think "nobody wears 99 out of respect/deference to Gretzky" is so much better than a league-wide mandate.

My favorite Gretzky stat and one of my favorite sports stats is that Wayne and Brent Gretzky have the most combined points between two brothers in NHL history. Wayne has 2,857. Brent has 4.
