MLB Must ACT -- White Sox / Twins

How can MLB / MLB umps allow two teams to play a regular season game in their alternates? It's getting to the point where no one cares about the aesthetics of sports or the visual beauty of sports, and simply allowing anything to go.

Last night featured the Twins and Chi Sox from Target Field. We come from an AS game and seeing all the great home AL jerseys, so I guess that was too much for teams to bear, so both wore their alternates -- navy for Minn and black for Chi.

the result: awful

well as long as teams let the players decide what to wear, MLB doesn't need to step in. It's all about marketing and selling items anyway. I honestly don't have a problem with it except that for this game, the colors are close so it may cause confusion.

Well, to be fair, one team is wearing black and the other navy... i mean yeah they look similar, but its not a big enough difference to hinder watching the game, especially with the (fairly significant) amount of red on the Twin jersey.

I saw navy vs. navy once (1998 or so Padres vs. Brewers at County Stadium) and it was awful. This is not as bad, but yeah, it's not fun for those in what used to be known as the cheap seats. I'd rather they just have a rule that if the home team picks an alt, the road team must wear the primary. I know A's/Twins or Reds/Brewers would not be too bad, but so what. Is it that important that teams wear their alts that often? Just a simple rule about alts so no judgments have to be made about black vs. blue or royal vs. navy.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I was at a AAA game today (Portland Beavers vs. Colorado Springs Sky Sox), and BOTH teams were wearing navy blue jerseys and navy blue hats. It was ridiculous.

I was at a Sacramento Rivercats vs Salt Lake Bees game a few weeks ago and there was the exact same problem, just replace navy with black. Absolutely no excuse for that.

(on becoming the Marlins of the AL): exactly. and it needs to stop.

check this out,for easy viewing (you can just look at a day-by-day gallery cover to tell what's being worn):

July Schedule

June Schedule

In the month of June, primary home used 3 times, alt used 23 times. That's even beyond the Marlins.

In the month of July, thus far, they've used the alt. 9 times and the primary home once (the game Peavy got hurt, so I guess it's definitely banished now).

Point of reference...I actually had to research the last time the world saw the road grays (one of the unsung jerseys in all of sports, IMHO) : May 30 in Tampa.

WoW!

and the Sox are the hottest team in baseball so don't stop what's working right now, who cares what jersey they wear. baseball really isn't a sport where you might get confused with an opposing players uni being close to their own, say like soccer or something, for the majority of a game baseball players are stationary.

But when the players are in motion, it is the most crucial part of the game. Confusion will not occur that often, but why even risk it when you don't have to?

There is a rule. MLB instituted it a couple of years ago. Teams are discouraged from wearing similar-colored alts against each other. Navy/Black and Red/Brick/Orange are considered matches, in addition to the teams that have the same color alts. And home team gets first choice, but teams are notified in advance so they know to bring the necessary jerseys (like HOU, who will take their greys to ATL, ARI, SF, and TEX this season to switch out of the bricks when needed).

However, some teams ignore the rule at will. ATL and SD have been the worst offenders in the past (although they've improved this year and are following the rule more now. The White Sox are blowing off the rule because they are hot and they are sticking with the "hot" jersey. This has been their M.O. for most of the 2000's.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

i don't have a problem with alt vs alt if the colors contrast enough, but navy/black, red/brick, etc are a problem in my book.

I am interested in pre-ordering your book.

Couldn't agree more - that's a gorgeous road jersey.

You'd think that the White Sox would want to avoid copying the Cubs, who sort of have a monopoly on the "alt jersey as de facto road" thing.

well, they won the one game in which they used the home primaries , right? Then they went right back to black.

Yup. At least I'm not crazy. I hope this isn't a permanent move to use black 85 % of the time.

The road uniform is classic. It's simple. A vintage-enough feel to be deemed timeless and a current-enough feel to be relevant. Can't ask for a better combination. I have no idea why they'd want to deprive the world of seeing their "true colors," especially the road grays.

I also think it's quite cynical, too. It's done under the guise of creating momentum / consistency as the team wins. I get it. It's like a good-luck charm. But it's like the team had a "eureeka" moment in which they said "let's wear the black all the time because we can wear it anywhere we want (unless Toronto busts out a black; i'm assuming even the idiotic league wouldn't stand for black on black.") So why don't all teams just use one jersey? Right?

At some point, an "alternate" uniform loses its meaning if it becomes the most-used garment.

It is deemed "alternate" because it is the "alternative" to the norm. when it is the norm, something is wrong.

Please note: I think the black Sox jersey is FINE. Not great. It's fine. It's nice enough. I wouldn't mind seeing it about 2 out of 7 days. That's 28 % (if you play every day of the week). Most teams have a travel day on Monday or Thursday, so we're talking 2 out of 6 days (that's 33 % of the time). What in the world is wrong with that????

Someone on another website keeps a uniform tracker, and here is the results through yesterday:

Home White: 10 games

Road Gray: 10 games

Black Alt: 68 games

That is friggin ridiculous. Not only has it become the defacto road jersey, it is the defacto home jersey too. That is especially bad since the black jersey, while good in moderation, is by far the worst of the three. For branding purposes, it is stupid for the team to allow this to happen. They are trying to sell the fans white and gray jerseys which almost never see the field. The White Sox need to get their act together and limit the use of alts to once or twice a week on set days of the week. I also think MLB needs a strict rule (supported by fines) that only one team can wear alts in any given game. I don't care if the colors are as different as orange and black. One team should be in normal jerseys.
