Gothamite
And from what I've seen, the closer it gets to the "traditions of clubs half a world away" the better the League does. So, you'd ascribe Major League Soccer's growing cachet to the international-style team names of six member-clubs? I would ascribe the growing cachet of MLS to the league's growing awareness that it should stop trying to "Americanize" the sport in any way, and instead embrace the long international tradition. Which includes, but is not limited to, the adoption of a more European-style naming aesthetic for many of its teams. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog. Lee.
Seems to me that a lot of you are simply missing the main point that Brian is trying to make, which is that the KC Wizards have thrown away a 14 years of soccer history and market building AS THE WIZARDS in order to half-assedly rebrand themselves as Sporting Kansas City. This instance isn't just about North American naming conventions vs European ones, it's about throwing away a perfectly good (if initially silly) area-centric identity in order to cash in on a new stadium with new merch. They've abandoned their history to try to re-connect with area soccer fans, when it simply didn't need to be done.IMNSFHO, a better way to go about things would have been to build up the strengths of the existing Wizards name; adopt emerald green as your primary color, work in some kind of actual imagery that lends itself to, you know, wizards. Buy a :censored:ing dragon. Whatever. Keep your base, and build. Don't scrap everything on a whim in order to cash in on the European naming 'trend.' patsox
IDK. Feel free to prove me wrong, but It seems to me like you feel the "place name-nickname" style of branding superior. Not at all. In fact, my top five team identities in all of Major League Soccer are currently:1)Philadelphia Union2) Toronto FC3) FC Dallas4) Seattle FC5) Vancouver Whitecaps FCI agree with that list, but add that I wish FC Dallas would have gone with Dallas FC and I'd throw in the Rapids too. IMO those are the only decent identities in the league, with the exception of maybe the Galaxy. As for Sporting KC or Kansas City Sporting or SC Kansas Sporting City or whatever they're called, they're just trying too hard. I never liked the name Wizards, but come on. At least it made a little bit of sense. They really should have just tried to work a new logo and color scheme around the existing name. -kj
The color choice makes this all worse. KC used to, until the last few years, have a nice, unique-to-MLS* shade of blue:Then they moved towards a standard royal/cobalt (or whatever Adidas calls it), incorporating navy and yellow as they went along for no particular reason.I'm hoping the fans still chant/sing/say Wizards and never use Sporting.* I'm sure this is where CW corrects me. But to me, KC's blue always stood out in a league with a ton of blue teams.Oh, and it's not really on-topic, but: San Jose, you're not an all-black team; you're blue with black shorts. Go back to that. You're not DC**; quit pretending.** DC when they didn't suck, I mean. Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop! TFoA
It's it's "Sporting KC," then what does SC stand for? This makes no sense. Kansas City Sporting Soccer Club? That's where it lost me. They refer to themselves as Sporting KC, yet there's an SC smackdab in the (sorta) middle of the logo. That, combined with the cookie-cutter kits just makes this a complete cluster:censored: of half assed-ness.

patsox
Oh yeah. The other thing that's perplexing the hell out of me is the kits. Isn't that some cheap template that came out like four years ago? I'm pretty sure my rival team in high school got kits with that design in about 06. Ez Street
As a native Kansas who DETESTS the Wizard Of Oz, I'm glad they shed the name based off bad reference in a move. That movie depicts Kansas as a backward, dusty, black and white bore. It's simply not.The funny thing is, most of the time the franchise was in Missouri. There is NO community connection.Yes the team had history with the name, so what. They still embrace it.As you can see I'm warming to it and don't care what non-fans think. There is a bigger picture as far as this club is concerned now and i'm on board. @DavidStreeter
rams80
There is a bigger picture as far as this club is concerned now and i'm on board. But are there enough wealthy "preppy" white males to go around in Kansas City? Because honestly, Europoseur soccer, rugby, and whatever other sport they are contemplating draw on the same small socioeconomic demographic. If you want to grow the "brand" you may need to target sports with slightly larger appeal.
