Prokhorov: Nets to change name for 2012 Brooklyn move

From Paul Lukas himself:

Question: Are the Nets slated to become the Brooklyn New Yorkers? Answer: No. I have been told by an NBA source what the Nets will be called when they move a few stinking blocks from my house to Brooklyn, and while I’m not at liberty to disclose what the team name will be, I can affirm that it is definitely not the New Yorkers. Trust me on this one.

That was fun while it lasted.

Phew. Glad it's won't the "New Yorkers," and it especially doesn't have that awful logo. Isn't the word "Knick" kind of a loose term for a New Yorker anyways? However, while (hopefully) the worst of this situation is over, I'm not so happy that the team name has (apparently) been determined this soon.

Knicks is a shortened version of knickerbockers, probably the lamest name ever.

Awesome. The only problem I see though is the mascot is holding a beer which is brewed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Woodridge, Illinois. Gotta at least keep the brew local to Brooklyn :P

EDIT: Wow, I never knew Pabst was brewed in Illinois. You learn something new every day.

It's not. Woodbridge is just where they're headquartered nowadays. They don't actually brew their own beer either. They contract it out to larger breweries... mainly Miller. Therefore, some Pabst (Schlitz and Blatz as well) is still brewed in Milwaukee.

And it's still amusing to me that the brew I (and I'm sure most other Milwaukeeans in my age bracket) grew up knowing as "my grandpa's beer" is now the choice drink of the pretentiously trendy.

Is it just me or does the current blue/gray/red theme suit the Brooklyn whatevers much better than it does the New Jersey Nets?

The New Jersey Nets are supposed to be garish red/white/blue, not the subdued blue/grey/red.

But the subdued blue/gray/red really conjures the nostalgic feel, Brooklyn Dodgers aesthetic that they're presumably aiming for after the move.

I just hope that the Nets (or any other team for that matter) never uses the shade of Red that they used between 1977-1978 through 1996-1997:

That is just the most bizarre, pinkish-Red ever. Really not a good color.

*crosses fingers for Brooklyn Knights*

I agree. I think "Knights" is a great nickname that no team in the four major team sports leagues currently uses.

I just hope they use "New York" rather than "Brooklyn" as the prefix. Naming the team after a borough rather than the city itself seems kinda silly.

The Catch of the Day!

yea but dont "New York Knights" and "New York Knicks" share 11 letters? need to distinguish themselves a tad more than that...

Ok then how about the New York Crimson Knights? New York Golden Knights? New York Nighty Knights? etc. etc.

We can add another word to the nickname to spread it out.

Yeah Like Brooklyn Knights or Brooklyn Nets. Or New York Nets.

You can't take NY Knights, because myself and almost anyone else will think of this guy.

Love It:

NewYorkers-Uniform(1).jpg

NewYorkers-Mascot.jpg

Dylan the Hipster will be the New Yorkers official mascot when they take up residency in Brooklyn. Dylan is a jaded young man who lives off his parents earnings, rides a bicycle he purchased from a thrift store and has a passion for sleeve tattoos and inappropriately tight fitting pants. Dylan the Hipster will usually show up late for games and then complain that the NBA was much cooler before the merger.

Meh... teams named "(color) Noun" always sound like college teams that had to change their nickname from "Indians" or "Savages" or something.

New York Titans would sound sick now that the NLL team is gone.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

In professional soccer, that's a very common thing. There's 20 clubs in the English Premier League, 5 of them are based in London, and all 5 are named after their borough, not London.

Chelsea and Fulham are in West London, Tottenham & Arsenal in North London, and West Ham who are in East London.
