JTernup
Well....I have a black on black blue jays (original logo) 5950, and it looks terrible... Way too high a crown, it goes past my ears... I'm wondering --- are those fashion hats the same fit as the official mlb ones? I need a new hat pretty desperately. I've seen the low-crown 5950's on the new era website, thinking about getting one of those. Just got one of the twins/fortyseven caps similar to what was mentioned in the OP....a reds hat with my avatar logo, black with red brim. Awesome looking, but the low crown might be a little too low, and its an XL and still a bit tight for my massive head.As far as material goes, I'm fine with the 5950....it looks good, and presumably they've done the research into what material does the job best. My favorite hat of all time is the original BP 3930....the one before they added the hideous ear stripe thing. Anyways -- I've been scouring the internet trying to find anyone who sells them. If anyone knows where they can be found, it'd be the single greatest piece of news in the history of the universe.well i doubt you live in colorado but the sportsfan in denver has a bunch of 39thirty hats for very cheap so you may want to check a larger store like that. It still just seems crazy to me that new era wouldn't just bring back those hats that everyone, PLAYERS INCLUDED, loved (I remember when they added the stupid ear flap things, guys not wanting to wear them, and jokingly drawing the flaps onto their old BPs.) If anyone ever locates an XL original black Reds BP, I will pay above cost to get my hands on it.
xTr1pleXx
Is Lincecum's cap the 5950? It doesn't look like it has the same structure as a 5950, and it seems much more faded, unlike the rest of the 5950's. It's especially noticeable whenever there's a conference on the mound and you can look at the other infielders/coaches' caps right next to his. That's why it is so faded and worn. He didn't want a new one. They stuck the WS patch on his old dingy game hat. He'll probably peel it off and keep wearing it next season. NikeJacket
Actually for guys like Lincecum and other MLB players, New Era molds the crown lower for them so it's less boxy. The buckram (lining on the front 2 panels of the cap) is made of cotton and plastic that forms when heated. It used to be real easy to do this when the 59fifty's were wool as the wool shrunk as well. You could easily get a perfect looking cap with a little hot water. With the new polyester versions, you have to heat the buckram in the oven or w/ a hairdryer to mold it.For the op, MLB actually considered switching the on-field cap to the twins (now 47 brand) 100% cotton franchise back in the late 90's as unstructured caps were popular and sales of the 59fifty were just so-so. But they felt they looked too sloppy, and instead started offering the molded 'low crown' versions to the players and for retail sale.Obviously, there are some players who meticulously wear the cap and others who just plop a new one on each game.
