MLB Logo&Uniform changes

It was dumb when the Phillies did it. You've got a big flag flying in your stadium, you don't need a patch on the jersey to remind everyone that you won (unless of course you're trying to sell jerseys that otherwise haven't changed in nearly 20 years but now will because there's a shiny new patch.)

Bingo. I saw plenty of World Series jerseys at Sunday's game. If I were a Phillies' fan, I'd rather have the Series patch than the Series Champs jersey. I mean, who cares about the jersey from the year after?

I would want to make sure the team is focused on 2011; after the home opener's awarding of rings, banner raising, etc. I'd want the team to think about this season and winning the 2011 World Series.

if there was the slightest bit of evidence that was happening, I would agree with you.

Doesn't matter if it actually does happen or not; if you aren't thinking about this season, it isn't good.

Of course it matters. You're suggesting that "wearing a patch celebrating last season" necessarily means "not thinking about this season."

But that's simply not true.

And how would you know for sure. You in the Giants' clubhouse?

Yeah, they probably are completely focused on 2011 and aren't thinking about last season during this season, but 2010 is over. There is no need for a patch.

thank you. I'm glad you agree with me.

As I said before, if there was the slightest bit of evidence that was happening, I would agree with you. But there is none, and the very idea is silly.

No, it isn't silly because this is the 2011 season. 2010 is over. Nowhere there did I agree with you. We're not agreeing here, so no point in further beating a dead horse.

Most MLB players don't care what is on their sleeves, let alone get distracted by it. (Unless, of course, there's a corporate symbol or design with a check attached to its display, but even then someone else likely concerns themselves with that.)

As far as the argument that some individuals wearing the patch didn't win the World Series, what better way to remind people that it's a team game? It's not there to celebrate the individuals, it's there to recognize the franchise accompishment... and sell more jerseys.

EDIT: The Chicago Blackhawks apparently think there is something to this theory; their Twitter account took down the Stanley Cup champions logo from their avatar after going down 3-0 to Vancouver. Let's see how focused they get in Game 4. (Should they take the banner down, too? Players look up sometimes and might catch a glimpse and lose focus. :) )

Does anyone know what uniforms the Braves and Phillies will be wearing this Sunday for the Civil Rights Game?

http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110509&content_id=18844156&vkey=civilrights2011

When the Braves and Phillies play in the Civil Rights Game on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. ET, the teams will be wearing throwback uniforms from 1974, when Aaron broke Babe Ruth's career home run record by hitting his 715th on April 8.

More interested in seeing what Saturday's game will look like, as the Braves will dress as the Atlanta Black Crackers, and the Phillies will dress as the Philadelphia Stars.

Why wouldn't they wear the Negro League uniforms for the Civil Rights Game itself, and then wear the Hank Aaron throwbacks a day earlier and thus one day closer to April 8th? Why wear the Hank Aaron throwbacks at all? They were ugly.

Wearing the uniforms from a segregated league to celebrate the Civil Rights Movement seems a bit off-base, no?

Well, what would they wear? Both leagues were segregated.

The teams in the first few Civil Rights Games wore what were supposed to be "Negro League-inspired" fauxbacks, though how they were "inspired" is anybody's guess, because these just had the city names written in Impact (yes, Impact like an internet meme) with nothing else, and Negro League uniforms generally seemed a lot more distinctive than that. At any rate, the Negro Leagues are still something to be proud of in terms of running successful businesses and producing quality ballplayers despite the misfortune of it all. If you can't wear them for this game because of segregation, than you can't wear any Negro League throwbacks or pre-1947 uniforms ever.

Right but I think the generally accepted time frame for the Civil Rights Movement was 1960s-70s (or post Brown v. Board of Education)...where the Negro Leagues were essentially extinct. So why not wear something non-anachronistic for the actual "Civil Rights Game"?

Have some of the players on each team where the throwback MLB jersey, and some wear the throwback Negro League jersey. It's not like baseball players all have to wear the same uniforms.
