Best/Worst Sports Predictions You Recall or Made

Worst- I've been a huge Oriole homer on here. Each year I predict them to do better than they actually do, only to have my heart broken. I think the worst was when I thought their offseason of Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford, and Danys Baez would bring them to a winning season. My logic was that the bullpen the year before was so horrible it cost them many games. I quickly learned spending money or relievers (and losing picks) is stupid. After last season, I've learned to never be optimistic about the O's again.

Best- There's usually a thread on here around New Year's when everyone makes their sports predictions for the year. In the 2007 thread, I accurately predicted that Florida would beat Ohio State in the Final Four. That was probably the only pick I ever got right in those threads. But I thought it was pretty cool I got the winner and the matchup correct, 2 months before the field was even set.

Worst: Whenever I think the Chargers are going to win a playoff game that they're favored to win. They always choke and commit a ton of penalties and blunders (Marlon McCree comes to mind), and then it comes out that half the team hit the club the night before. Never again will I expect a playoff victory for the Chargers.

Best: I thought the Cardinals were going to make the Super Bowl even before they played the Falcons. I just had a feeling about that team.

Every year me and my dad bet on the NFL playoffs at the casinos. Some years are better than others. In the 02/03 playoffs we picked every game but one correctly, which we lost because the Titans didn't cover the spread. Then put all of the money we won on the Buccaneers and they clobbered the Raiders. The following year however, we lost all but one game.

I had such a good feeling about the San Francisco Giants starting back in April that I watched almost every game and told everyone that they were going to win the World Series. Of course I say that every year, but this year something definitely felt different.

Back in 2002 my middle school math teacher paired all of us all off in groups of two and offered 100 points of extra credit to anyone who could predict who would be in the NCAA basketball championship game. I picked Maryland, my partner picked Indiana. He told us that in his time as a teacher he had never had anyone get it completely right. Just last year though, my final four was dead by the second round.

Two other picks I remember njtank made that really stand out (one good, one bad) both have involved the Colts:

He correctly had Indy winning Super Bowl XLI in 2006-07, but picked them to go 5-11 last year when they made it back to the big game.

I predicted Michael Vick's injury the year he got hurt in the pre-season. It was mostly in passing. I was on the phone with my brother and said "Yea watch Vick get hurt. Then our whole season will be screwed" Vick got hurt, and our whole season did get screwed!

IIRC I picked the Blackhawks to win the Cup (or at least the West) at the beginning of the season last year. I also used to dominate NCAA Lacrosse tournament brackets in high school in competitions with my lacrosse team (for instance, I picked Syracuse over Hopkins in the title game in 08 when everyone had Duke winning it all).

My worst pick might have to be the Mets winning the World Series in 2007. Which I stuck to at the beginning of September no less. Look what happened there.

Good media prediction I recall:

Hearing an announcer on a Pittsburgh local radio station suggesting that listeners shouldn't be surprised if the Cleveland Browns moved out of town - back in 1990.

Good predication I made:

I pegged not only the final score of Super Bowl XXV, but while sitting in the stands with my cousin at halftime, I roughly sketched out how the game's second half scoring was going to progress... including the Norwood missed field goal try.

I also predicted the Cincinnati Bengals would be in Super Bowl XVI before the 1981 season started, but that pales by comparison.

I don't know how many home runs I've predicted, and how many interceptions. Heck, I was watching the Colts this past Saturday and I sat there and thought, "Interception" and Dallas threw and interception. The funny thing was I think the next play Manning throws and interception. I know I predicted the Broncos over the Packers. I've probably done a few more, but I can't remember. As far as bad predictions... most Super Bowls. I can somehow pick who will play in the Super Bowl, but I have issues predicting who will win.

Back in 2000 I worked with a guy that was a diehard Yankees fan, and they had just come off another World Series win, and during the free agency period after that season when Mike Mussina signed with New York I came into work the next morning and told him that the Yankees would never win a World Series with him on the roster. I claimed that since he jumped ship from one side of a hated rivalry to the other to title chase that he wasnt going to win one playing for the Yankees. So as it goes, Mussina retires at the end of the 2008 season, the Yankees win the World Series in 2009.

I don't think it counts as a "prediction", but I had a feeling that the 2007 Patriots were going to lose the Superbowl and end up 18-1.

I think the commentators in the post-game show summed it up best when they said something to the effect of "they were going up against history, and history isn't an easy opponent".

I've predicted every single year that the Jacksonville Jaguars will be irrelevant.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Cubs take the 2015 World Series in five straight over the Miami Gators.

I wish I could have gone back and put some money on the Cubbies!
