Black is a team color. I don't see what people are upset about. It's just a team wearing a jersey using one of their alternate colors.

But they were decked out in their school colours. TCU's a purple and black team, and they wore more purple than black.

The team, in the Rose Bowl, wore purple helmets and pants, and black jerseys. This may just be me, but I always consider a football uniform's primary colour to be the colour of the jersey. Therefore TCU's Rose Bowl uniforms were primarily black. Had they gone with purple jerseys and black pants they would have been fine.

That being said, they get a tone of credit for ditching Nike's atrocities and going with a set that actually featured purple.

I like TCU a lot... I like their uniforms... but if your recent history of uniforms is really going outside of the box, a la Frog Skin pattern, then why tone it down for the Rose Bowl? I just think they should have went with something more modern, like they have. Even if they went with just the Frog Skin helmet and pants, with a purple shirt or black shirt, with the rose in the frogs mouth... it would have been a nice look, because then the God-awful red stripes on the helmet would have at least matched something.

There you go generalizing again I'll have you know, this traditionalist here thinks TCU's Rose Bowl look was fantastic, maybe the best Rose Bowl look in the game's history. Maybe. UCLA in '99 was a sharp look too, as was Northwestern's in '96 (very similar to TCU's).

Exactly. The school color was the prominent part of the uniform, the athletic color of black was a compliment, and TCU looked like TCU. It's not like they pulled an Oregon & just looked like a Nike product (which COULD'VE happened had they gone with the Pro Combat uniform that Nike supplied them), they took the best part of the Pro Combat uni, combined it with their regular purple pants, then put the rose in their primary helmet and bam, a special uniform for a special game. Seriously don't see the reason behind the uproar, especially considering that TCU's uniform was REALLY classy. Normally I understand most people disliking the look if Nike does something really funky (to the point where only Lights Out & random new guys would be lauding its brilliance ) , but I think that most of this is NHFNHS. (Nike Hating for Nike Hating's Sake. )

Because, as you said, it isn't the primary color. How would it look if the Steelers or Chiefs got to the Super Bowl and decided to wear yellow jerseys? Or if the Giants brought back the red jerseys had they made the playoffs?

I didn't love TCU's look, though the jerseys weren't bad. Still, football uniforms should be in the team's primary color.

Fair enough. I just think that people shouldn't hate the uniform for the reasons mentioned earlier. If people dislike it for the fact of not wearing a jersey of your primary color on the biggest stage, I understand. I don't necessarily agree with it, but that is wear personal preference comes in.

There's a profound difference between the Steelers and Chiefs and TCU, though. TCU's had a black alternate jersey for some time now (pre-pro combat), and as early as the Davey O' Brien years, had a black leather helmet. TCU wearing a black jersey is not that crazy to me at all. And it wasn't like the had some crazy piping or something, it was a simple, classy look.

What's interesting to me is that they only wore the jerseys, and disregarded the helmet and pants that Nike gave them. Anyone know the story here? I don't know if there is a contractual obligation, but I'm sure Nike is pissed regardless, especially considering that the special cleats were called out on television for making the players slip.

I thought the uniforms looked really good, my gripe is the frog-skin numbers. Now I do love all of the frog scaly helmets, pants, and number combos alot(though now whenever I see anything with scales, frogs, or lizards I automaticly think TCU, but maybe that's good for them?) it's just that without any other part of the uniform using the pattern, the numbers look out of place. It's like if army used their black jersey with camo numbers, or any camo part of the uniform, with the regular gold pants, helmet, etc.. It just doesn't look right.

Black is not a school color. TCU football has worn black on a off for a long time, but it is not an official school color.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're the first team since Washington State in 2003 to feature a rose on thier helmet, right? I'm glad to see TCU pull this off, it looks fantastic.

Yes, that's my recollection as well. I'm very happy to see TCU resurrect this tradition.

Agreed. Had some extra time at work and decided to take on the task of vectoring it, using Desmond's photo:

*Tried to make it look like the logo as a sticker on the purple helmet. It's not exact, but I like where I got with it in a couple hours' work*

Of note: The "TCU" lettering is not the same as the official logo (obviously thicker and also seems squashed vertically), which I thought a lil odd...
