Professional Outdoor Hockey League

With all the outdoor excitement this year (The Big Chill, Winter Classic, etc.), I've decided to start a concept series called the POHL or the Professional Outdoor Hockey League. So far I've come up with over 40 city ideas and each city has below freezing weather in winter and 1-3 outdoor stadiums.

Boston Fenway Park

Pittsburgh PNC Park Heinz Field

Minneapolis Target Field TCF Bank Stadium

Chicago U.S. Cellular Field Wrigley Field Soldier Field

Detroit Comerica Park

New York Citi Field Yankee Stadium

Philadelphia Citizens Bank Park Lincoln Financial Field Franklin Field

Cincinatti Great American Ballpark Paul Brown Stadium

Washington DC Nationals Park

Kansas City Kauffman Stadium Arrowhead Stadium

Cleveland Progressive Field Cleveland Browns Stadium

St. Louis Busch Stadium

Denver Coors Field Invesco Field at Mile High

Ann Arbor Michigan Stadium

Columbus Ohio Stadium

Lincoln Memorial Stadium (NE)

East Rutherford New Meadowlands Stadium

South Bend Notre Dame Stadium

Madison Camp Randall Stadium

Fayetteville Razorback Stadium

East Lansing Spartan Stadium

Orchard Park Ralph Wilson Stadium

Green Bay Lambeau Field

Columbia Faurot Field

Iowa City Kinnick Stadium

Foxborough Gillette Stadium

Lexington Commonwealth Stadium

Provo LaVell Edwards Stadium

New Haven Yale Bowl

Morgantown Mountaineer Field

Louisville Papa John's Cardinal Stadium

Ames Jack Trice Stadium

Boulder Folsom Field

Colorado Springs Falcon Stadium

Piscataway Rutgers Stadium

Manhattan, KS Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium

Bloomington Memorial Stadium (IN)

Lawrence University of Kansas Memorial Stadium

Vancouver BC Place Stadium

Montreal Stade Olympique

Edmonton Commonwealth Stadium (Canada)

Toronto Rogers Centre

Calgary McMahon Stadium

Hamilton Ivor Wynne Stadium

I'm already picking most of the stadiums that have already hosted an outdoor game. Tell what everyone else thinks because I want to cut it down to 24-30 cities before I start making the concepts. Sorry if the list is kind of messy.

Toronto also has BMO Field.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

OK, I should probably explain a few things about how I was going to do this. Obviously, all of the cities have to have below freezing so I don't know if Seattle does or not. One rule I was going to add was that each team if their city has it, can have two home stadiums. So any suggestions are good for anywhere else you guys think I've missed.

I like the Provo option. Granted, the stadium used is for a team a loathe, but it's close to home. And, if I may be honest, Edwards Stadium is actually a really nice stadium. And believe me, it gets crazy @$$ cold down here, so that won't be any problem.

The opinions I express are mine, and mine only. If I am to express them, it is not to say you or anyone else is wrong, and certainly not to say that I am right.

I've come up with a starter list of cities and stadiums that I'm doing for sure. There are many other options that I'm looking at so I'm still open to suggestions. I still want to get at least 24 to 30 teams.

Boston - Fenway Park

Pittsburgh - Heinz Field/PNC Park

Chicago - Wrigley Field/U.S. Cellular Field/Soldier Field

Detroit - Comerica Park*

Minnesota - Target Field/TCF Bank Stadium

Denver - Coors Field/Invesco Field at Mile High

Ann Arbor - Michigan Stadium*

East Rutherford - New Meadowlands Stadium

Orchard Park - Ralph Wilson Stadium

Provo - LaVell Edwards Stadium

Vancouver - BC Place Stadium

Montreal - Molson Stadium

Edmonton - Commonwealth Stadium

Toronto - Rogers Centre/BMO Field

Calgary - McMahon Stadium

Hamilton - Ivor Wynne Stadium

*-One team in different cities

different color means not official stadium

While BC place's new roof is going to be awesome, how would they be able to fit CFL, MLS, and Hockey in the same stadium full time?

I still think empire field would kick ass for hockey

agreed a retractable roof does not an outdoor stadium make

I think it's totally pointless to put a hole so far in the centre of that stadium. You will not be able to see anything but sky when youre actually sitting in those seats and I think a lot of people with be disappointed with the experience.

Empire Field however is awesome. It's a shame they're tearing it down. In terms of sight lines and views it's probably the best pro football stadium in North America. Would be insane for an outdoor hockey game if they could guarantee the weather.
