What Sports Moment Gives You Chills?

Then there's the 2000 Wild Card game in the Superdome. The Saints had opened a 31-7 fourth quarter lead, at which time my GF said, "What's wrong? I'd think you'd be happy." And I replied, "When you've watched the Saints as long as I have, you learned never to cheer until the last second is off the clock."

And sure enough, with 2:36 left the defending SB champ Rams had closed to 31-28, the Saints were punting, and everybody in the Superdome feared we'd be going home disappointed yet again. So when Hakim graciously dropped the punt, who could blame Saints play-by-play guy Jim Henderson for saying "There is a God after all!" and nearly breaking down right there on the air?

Ugh. I remember watching this during the blizzard in NY. Hakim could dazzle you with his moves, but his hands weren't worth crap. If he doesn't muff that punt, the Rams win that game and quite possibly another NFC title. Rams should've won a 2nd or 3rd SB during that run. What a waste of talent.

This was the exact moment I became a hockey fan.

I taped highlights of games (homeruns, great plays, the last third of Chris Bosio's no-hitter) for ten years or so starting at age 9. I went away for college in 95, and I remember watching the national broadcast of the M's Yankees game. It was amazing. Then a week later I got a tape in my school mailbox, and my dad had taped that game for me.

Hearing it with Dave Niehaus' voice about a week or two later after the Mariners were eliminated by the Indians, it gave me absolute chills. Hearing him call just about anything did that, though. God, he was a class act. Every time I go to my mom's storage shed, I look for those tapes. They'll turn up sooner or later.

Even if I hate the team, the Stanley Cup presentation and the players taking turns skating with it gives me chills every year. It's especially great to watch old veterans lift it for the first time. Ray Bourque is the all-timer, but I also like Glen Wesley, Brindamour, Andreychuk, Selanne.

My number one has been covered a couple times here....

"After the accident in turn four of the Daytona 500 ... we lost Dale Earnhardt."

Everything about that moment was felt in my core. I wasn't an Earnhardt fan, but like most, I respected the hell out of his skill. I had a feeling in my gut as soon as the accident happened that it wasn't a normal Daytona "big one" ... I was watching the telecast with my pops. And we just looked at each other when it happened. We both knew it. The pure emotion that Waltrip was feeling in the pressbox puts the whole thing over the top. There is video from where Ken Schrader ( the guy that was the first to Dale's car) talks to Michael Waltrip in victory circle, leans over and says something in his ear and you can see Waltrip's face change.

Schrader said after exiting the infield care center that he wasn't a doctor and he wouldn't comment on the injuries. But he knew too.

10, 20, 30 years from now, video of that accident will my my eyes leak a little, my heart will get caught in my throat. It's one thing to watch an icon retire, it's another to watch them pass away.

All the other events that give me "chills" fall FAR short of that one, and are more homer in nature...

- Game winning drive for UF vs FSU in 97 at the Swamp.

- Otis Nixon's catch against the Pirates in '92. No real significance, I just remember watching it as a 10yo kid.

- Sid Bream's slide to beat the throw to home against the Pirates in the '92 NLCS

- Dan Henderson vs Shogun Rua at UFC 139. 25 minutes of two men going to war and leaving it all in the cage. I was physically drained after watching the fight. May never be topped by another fight as long as I live. And I never want to see a second fight because I don't think it could live up to the first.

- Buster Douglas KOs Mike Tyson.

-

I never liked tennis. Somehow I got sucked into watching this live on ESPN and was just blown away by both men.

Welp, I just witnessed one that is still giving me goosebumps. Matt Cain was just dominating tonight.

I remember when Earnhardt died, I wasn't watching the 500, but my dad was, he was a huge NASCAR fan. I was driving home from somewhere with my mom and sisters, and came to the last 4 way stop before my house. My dad pulled up to the stop intersection, headed in the opposite direction. He waved to us and signaled to stop. We rolled down the windows and he said "Dale Earnhardt just died." I'll always remember that

Earnhardt was my favorite driver in NASCAR. I sat in stone faced shock for an hour after the news came in that he was dead. Honestly, I slowly started to lose enthusiasm for the sport after that. There weren't any other drivers I liked, NASCAR started changing rules just about every freaking year, and "innovations" like the Chase for the Cup system and the Car of Tomorrow finally made me stop watching for good.

That is the only time I have ever cried over a pro athlete's death. I called my cousin, who got me into NASCAR an indoctrinated me as a fan of the Intimidator, right after it happened knowing that he wasn't able to watch, and he brooke down. He's tough as nails and an ex Marine, and the only two times I've ever seen him tear up was at the death of his father and at the death of his idol, Dale Earnhardt.

It's gotta be the 2010 Olympic gold medal hockey game. I think 2002 was more significant but my personal experience in 2010 is what made it special. The game coincided with my train ride back to school at the end of reading week. I happened to be riding with a couple people from my high school that also go to my university. During the train ride from Ottawa to Toronto we all tried to follow the game on our computers but VIA's WiFi isn't the greatest. They announced the goals over the PA system but I couldn't help but feel like I was going to miss the entire game. My schoolmates and I all agreed that we would find the nearest TV as soon we got to Union Station and we ended up at Commuter's (for those of you who don't know it's a tiny little bar in the train station). The place was packed and people were outside watching through the glass. We got there just before Parise tied it up at the end of the third and realized we wouldn't be making our connecting train to St. Catharines. As soon as Crosby scored "the golden goal" the place erupted. We went outside and the streets downtown were full of waving flags, car horns honking, and people singing Oh Canada. I'll never forget it.
