Wow - that sucks. On the bright side, he has an excuse to wear an eye patch now, so should be a shoo-in for the Pirates job when it inevitably opens up after their 4-31 start.

Oakland isn't just going to be good this season, they're probably going to be scary good.

Their pitching will be scary good. Their hitting will just be scary.

Lots of 2-1 losses.

I have a feeling Oakland'll be on the winning end of more 2-1 games than the losing one. Their offense is good enough to score a few runs per game, and they've got arguably the best pitching staff in all of baseball. They were an above .500 team with Kevin Kouzmanoff as one of their leading hitters. Putting Matsui, Willingham and DeJesus in that lineup everyday more than likely isn't going to hurt them.

Exactly. They have a team that's pretty similar to the Giants just younger and with a better pitching staff IMO. And that's saying a lot considering how solid the Giants pitching staff is. They may be a season too premature, but if they keep their foundation they're gonna be a force soon enough.

BTW I said that about the Giants last year and we see how that turned out.

I don't care how good your pitching staff is (and to say it's better than SF's is laughable). That is a terrible offense. I would set the over/under on players with an .800 OPS (Baseline for a productive hitter) at 1.5, and take the under.

Call me crazy, or high, but I think the A's staff is more solid as a whole. They had a killer year last season and made some pretty solid additions while trimming the fat. Their bats aren't much to speak of, but if they can find that perfect storm things may work out extremely well for them. I don't know, crazy I guess. But I'm always overly optimistic about the A's chances, at least I'm consistent :P

San Diego was thought to have a pitiful offense outside of Gonzalez last year, and they almost squeezed a division championship out of the old jalopy. I can see the A's eke something out of what they have. The Rangers are well short of unbeatable. Why not.

In a related story of misplaced optimism, this could be another year where the Cubs fall ass-backwards into a division title with 85 or something again, provided they get every break in the world. Wainwright's out for the year, Dusty Baker manages the Reds, and the Brewers have come up short plenty of times with hailed rosters, so it's not unthinkable as it seemed last November when the organization looked like a completely lost cause. It's much more likely that they finish with 78, of course, but if the Dempster/Zambrano/Garza/Wells rotation works out and gets fat on the Pirates and Astros instead of losing to them all the time like last year, then hey, something about 50,000 feet below the sky's the limit for these tenacious North Siders.

Finally, someone has to change "the trucks are on its way" before I gouge my eyes out with a rusted melon baller.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Oliver Perez has been released by the Mets.

So that brings the total up to $18M the Mets owe players that no longer play for them.

That's one less thing that I can make fun of the Mets about. Farewell, buddy. You provided your rival NL East fans many lulz.

They still have Tank as a fan, so only how many days before he's on the Brooklyn Bridge?

Looks like the Phillies will be without a 3rd baseman, 2nd baseman, and have a big question mark in right field when the season starts.

It's looking more and more likely that Chase Utley will miss the entire year, and Polanco is looking like he'll be in-and-out of the lineup quite a bit with his nagging injuries. Anyone who was using ink to write them in as the NL rep. for the World Series may need to get some white out.

It is a lot more that. The Mets begin their 25 year $1.1 installments to Bobby Bonilla this year. They chose this plan instead of paying $6 mil in 1999.

They have similar payment plans for Roberto Alomar, Roger Cedeno and several other players.

This team is a waling ponzi scheme.

Thanks for reminding me, I had almost forgot. This is one of my favorite baseball stories ever.

Bonilla is 47 years old, has been retired since 2001, and hasn’t played for the Mets since 1999, but when they bought out the remaining $5.9 million on his contract in January of 2000 they agreed to defer payment at eight percent interest. And now it’s time to pay the fiddler.

...The Mets were able to add Mike Hampton, Todd Zeile, and Derek Bell to the 2000 team that won the National League pennant and lost to the Yankees in the World Series, but now instead of simply paying him the $5.9 million in 2000 the team will end up giving Bonilla slightly under $30 million from 2011 to 2035. Bonilla was at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico this week for the Mets-Marlins series and referred to his unique arrangement as “that beautiful thing.”

Greatest. Retirement. Plan. Ever.

You know, when I see stuff like this, it really doesn't surprise me that the Mets ownership fell for what Madoff was selling.

Despite getting Cliff Lee, I really think that the Phillies took a step back this offseason. They're going to have a whole heap of issues on the offensive side of the ball with the loss of Werth and the potential injuries to Utley (who I had no idea could miss the whole season) and Polanco, and I as well get this feeling that Ryan Howard will have some struggles without The protection of Utley and Werth. Dominic Brown is a big question mark as well, the Phillies better hope he's ready to fill the void in that lineup. And they didn't do much that I can see to address their bullpen, which could've used a bit of strengthening. Victorino took a pretty big hit today, and while he'll probably be ok, if he goes down for any significant stretch this year the Phillies could have some really serious problems. Beyond their starters, the Phillies really don't impress me much this season. They're certainly not as well rounded as they were the last two seasons.
