I guess Jim Joyce has a brother.

What really gets me is the "great fan" stuff. It's sad to think of our country as a "Steeler Nation", because that would mean that we're a country of near-sighted inbreds from the mountains that can't speak competent English.

Calls like that are precisely why expanded instant replay and a challenge flag are needed in the MLB.

Selig won't do it though. Why actually fix the problems with officiating when you can hide behind the "human error is a part of the game" mantra and all the old codger, stick-in-the-mud baseball analysts will defend you?

Yes, I agree. Especially because managers still come out and argue even though it doesn't do anything; though I'm sure the feedback is needed by both sides. For things like this I'd agree, but I'm still going to laugh if someone says we should get rid of the human element all-together.

I only made it to the 15th inning before heading to bed. Just saw the call now... glad I didn't stay up. That was horrible. Beat writer said that the locker room was fired up after the game, hopefully the Pirates use this as some motivation for the rest of the road trip.

McKenry's glove looks like it just "swipe through". If there was a tag wouldn't it "hitch" when it hit Logo's leg?

The call might have been blown, but I don't think it's as conclusive as most people think.

"In the arena of logic, I fight unarmed."

I tweet & tumble.

Sepp Blatter concurs, and also wants you to know there's no better time to move the Dodgers to Qatar.

I'm sorry but that was the worst call I've ever seen. I watched a slow motion replay of the tag where it looked as if the play was closer than I thought, then all of the sudden this white spot came onto the screen from behind the catcher and I realized it was the plate, at least a good yard away from the initial tag. How in the world that could've happened and both Lugo and the ump make statements how it was the right call (at least initially) is pretty mind blowing.

Who would've thought that in late July we'd be complaining that the Pirates got hosed in a game? But losing in that fashion may propel them into a winning streak out of pure anger. Not to try to be predicting the future here, but what if after this game the Pirates go on a long losing streak and end up falling way out of the NL Central race? Then they go back to being awful for another 19 years? That would be two close calls at the plate that the franchise can never recover from. And I would just lol.

Edit:BB08-yeah I was going to ask about that too. What was he trying to do there? To me it looked intentional.

Word on the street twitter is that the Jays are in the process of trading Jason Frasor to the ChiSox for Edwin Jackson, then flipping Jackson to the Cardinals for Colby Rasmus.

If this actually happens, Alex Anthopolous: You are a demi-god.

(Not that you weren't already for finding a taker for the corpse of Vernon Wells)

Yeah, but the Jays may get stuck with Mark Teahen as part of the deal, so, uh, so there.

Someone will defend this.

They always do when this :censored: gets posted.

The umpire must have thought McKenry missed the tag. You know what? I thought so as well when I first saw that because it looked like McKenry just swung his arm before Lugo got there and missed. The funniest part in the whole thing was Proctor stumbling off the plate after he hit the ball...

They showed a replay angle here on the Atlanta morning news where at normal speed the umpire appears to say "you missed it" or something to that effect (the word "missed" is pretty clearly spoken). Not defending, just saying, because that did appear to be an awful call. The baserunner clearly thought he was out since he didn't make certain he'd touched home until the umpire said he was safe.

This also brings to mind a question: why is "close enough" good enough on force plays but not tags? On double plays, the guy tagging second sometimes misses it entirely but the runner is out anyway.

On the play where Fausto Carmona fell flat on his face, the runner got called safe at second because Janish didn't tag the bag and he was too busy arguing to throw to first. At least, that's what I think happened from the text I got that day from my Reds fan friend. ^_^

I'm still not totally sure he got the tag on him...

Okay watching it 15 more times, he did, but it wasn't the best of tags.

/Pirates shouldn't have :censored:ed up that squeeze attempt in the 9th. Let em pitch out on 0-1, worst that happens is you're trying to get it down 0-2, but you should've known they were gonna pitchout. If you let them pitch out 0-1, I don't think they would again on 1-1, and you send the runner then.

Edwin Jackson will in fact be sporting yet another jersey, as speculation is correct and Jackson and Teahen are sent to Toronto for Frason and Zack Stewart. This may very well be an attempt for Toronto to get Rasmus because apparently Tampa is willing to give up Niemann, Davis, or Cobb for Rasmus. Toronto might be trying to even Tampa's offer with this trade.

Also, Rangers and Giants are emerging as frontrunners for Beltran, with the Braves still in the mix.

And thirdly, overshadowed by last night's call, McCann will likely miss a couple weeks due to injury. Maybe that convinces the Braves to think more seriously about Beltran so that their lead doesn't dwindle without McCann's bat in the lineup.

Update:

White Sox Get:

RP Jason Frasor

SP Zach Stewart (AA)

Cardinals Get:

SP Edwin Jackson

RP Octavio Dotel

RP Marc Rzepczynski

OF Corey Patterson

Jays Get:

OF Colby Rasmus

Spare parts from Cards who will probably be traded.

----

Unbelievable. Jays get a 24-yr. old CF with elite upside for a bunch of spare parts and low-upside prospects.

Jays also get Teahan I believe.

AA You've done it again.

Look at this probable lineup next year.

CF - Colby Rasmus

SS - Yunel Escobar

LF - Travis Snider

RF - Jose Bautista

1B - Adam Lind

DH - Eric Thames

3B - Brett Lawrie

C - JP Arencibia

2B - ?

I'm doubtful Aaron Hill will be back, but either way the future is bright in T.O.
