The goalie and net cams.

We haven't seen those in a while.

The networks also had a "ref cam" clipped on the hat brim of NFL officials at one point. I was watching the Saints-Rams playoff game from 2000 a few weeks ago and there were some fantastic shots from the ref cam. Wish they'd bring that back. Same for helmet cams, which they experimented with briefly as well. Even if just in preseason, I would love to see what Brady, Brees, or Manning is seeing during a pass play.

Any 49ers starting quarterback since Jeff Garcia.

Some real immortal names here:

Tim Rattay

Ken Dorsey

Alex Smith

Cody Pickett

Trent Dilfer

Shaun Hill

Chris Weinke

J.T. O'Sullivan

Troy Smith

Could've drafted Aaron Rodgers instead... thanks, Niners! :D

A valid point, but Aaron Rodgers in SF is very likely not the same Aaron Rodgers. And perhaps Alex Smith in Green Bay is a very different Alex Smith than the one with the Niners.

Say Archie Manning had gone to a good team and the Saints had drafted Joe Montana. Or Steve Young had stayed in Tampa. History would be very different. Some Falcons fans go on and on, "Oh, if they'd just kept Brett Favre" as if the talent around a player, the coaching, and even front office have nothing to do with individual success. Brett Favre the Falcon would be leaving a far different legacy than Favre the Packer/Jet/Viking.

This is a very good point. What if David Carr had gone to the Titans? What if Ryan Leaf had gone to the Colts and Peyton Manning had gone to the Chargers? Would leaf still be a bust, or would the chargers have become a dominating NFL team?

.. or had Eli Manning wanted to play for the Chargers, would we have Lights Out? ^_^

I saw, I came, I left.

Oh, he "revolutionized" the game all right. Whenever he was on TV you'd be guaranteed to see a sick dunk by the other team.

To steal a quote from YouTube, Shawn Bradley has had more black wang in his face than Kim Kardashian.

Pro Beach Hockey

That was the first thing that came to my mind. Everything from the halfpipe like walls to Marty McSorley to the team names and jerseys was just God awful. I loved it as a kid, but the concept now seems absolutely ridiculous.

I dunno, that entire concept just seems so utterly "90s". Please tell me they wore Zubaz. That would make it perfect.

This picture just sums up the whole league perfectly.

Too true. Aaron Rodgers is who he is because he was lucky enough to fall to a team that didn't need him to magically produce wins in Week One. He watched, learned, and when his shot came he was more than ready.

Also couldn't agree more. Favre's career was largely due to the combination of Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren, who made him grow up. Somewhat.

International Basketball League

They used this black basketball and the international lane.

It lasted two years.

One of the league's founders, Michael Monus, was eventually convicted of having embezzled $10 million to finance the league, from a publicly-owned company he had founded, Phar-Mor. He was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison.

God, Phar-Mor. The store for people who weren't creeped out enough by Venture.

I'm gonna start a thread on creepy old retail stores.

Hard to belive that 10 years ago, WWE (then called the World Wrestling Federation) ventured into the football business with the XFL.

As it turned out, it was a disastrophe.

David Carr's career was wrecked by being sacked 60-70 times a year, every year. He had no chance going in and no confidence coming out of Houston. Had to be the worst offensive line in NFL history and it lasted for years.

...insert horrendous Sixers uniforms...

Hell, I'd call those uniforms a "failed experiment."

You could just say most 1990's NBA uniforms in general.

The only reason the XFL existed in the first place was because McMahon tried to buy the CFL, and was rebuffed in his efforts.

It did popularize "sky-cam" broadcasting, which is pretty cool.

What's worst is why this 1969 preseason experiment failed: the Saints' perpetually fouled up front office failed to notify the league of the change. The NFL promptly disallowed it and ordered the Saints to go back to the gold helmets.

Game pics of it are rare and I've yet to see one in color.

Wait, here's a color shot...

Have to admit I never expected to have a black Saints motorcycle helmet pop up in a Google image search.

It even has the wordmark bumper the Saints should be using on their helmets.
