Chad Ochocinco

Publicity stunt...I'm sure he's passionate about it and would take it seriously, but kicking a PAT is nothing like dribbling through defenders and putting one past the keeper.

Exactly!

Non sports fans have no idea that the Kansas City Wizards changed their name to whatever it is now. Yet they know Chad OchoCinco

from the Bengals or from his weeks on DWTS. After day 1, coaches will know the he IS the fastest guy on their roster, yet they will not change their game into "long ball" just for him. I think that he will make the team or it be known about his abilities to sell tix in the lower league or by one of his main sponsors...Reebok.

If he's going to play soccer, he needs to drop his last name entirely, like all the Brazilians.

Ochocinho?

No, probably drop Chad and just go by "Ochocinco".

I know MLS is minor league, but this minor league? If he can actually get into a side, it'll do more harm for the league's image than good.

Any publicity is still publicity.

I doubt if hes not any good they will sign him. I think hes taking this thing entirely seriously, but to KC it might be a joke.

I don't see where the harm would come in. Most people, including MLS, are well aware of soccer's place in the hierarchy of North American sport and know that it has a hard time attracting top athletes because of it. If Ocho makes it on to a side and does well, it tells us what we already know, but attracts more media attention (and presumably, more supporters) than ever before. If he makes it and does poorly, or at least doesn't stand out, it proves that MLS has progressed beyond something where players can get by solely on raw athleticism. I really don't see a losing proposition here.

They're definitely not minor league. They may not be on the level of the Big Four, but there's a huge difference between AAA baseball and MLS.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)

You're right - there's a huge difference.

AAA play is much closer to MLB than MLS is to the Premiership, La Liga, Sirie A and the like.

Apples and Oranges, my friend. AAA baseball is a level of baseball that feeds directly to the pros, where the MLS is America's version of pro soccer. It's not intended to be a minor league to the European leagues (even though it may seem that way at times). It's a smaller and less popular league, but it's still a major professional league. Comparing the MLS to the top European leagues is like comparing MLB to Honkbal Hoofdklasse. Its impossible for the Dutch leagues to ever really compete with MLB, but it's not trying to. But just because they're not even trying to be the best in the world, it's still a pretty kick ass league with some extremely talented players. Sure if you put a Dutch league team vs the Cardinals they'd probably get dump trucked most of the time, but every so you'll see them pull it off, like their national team did in the last WBC vs the Dominican Republic. You also see that at times in MLS frendlies vs the European leagues. Sure the MLS can't compete with Europe, but they still have an extremely high level of talent. The MLS isn't as much of a scrub as you're making it out to be.

For what its worth, Landon Donovan claims that he has a greater chance at winning American Idol than Ochocinco making Sportings roster.

Sure it is.

The fact that the very best MLS players can sometimes beat an EPL side's 3rd-string squad only proves my point.

I wish the quality of football in MLS was higher. But it isn't. Maybe one day it will be, but we're a long way off from that. It's a second-tier league at best.

Over 40 credentialed media to a practice. Over 1,000 people tuned in the web feed they created so you could tune into the practice (sporting85.com)

Maybe this is just a four-day experiment that ends on Saturday. But I feel like they want the chance to at least sell some jerseys. He's saying all of the right things and has already said "I'll play for free" and that he doesn't expect to get onto the field and would just love to stay and practice with them until NFL comes back if they'd let him.

I guess we'll see.

From the sounds of the most recent interview with the coach, sounds like they're going to let him go after Monday's reserve game.
