The Road to Omaha

Time for my two cents...

Dallas Baptist vs. California at Santa Clara (This one has me torn. On one side is Dallas Baptist, an indy program who is only in their 2nd NCAA tourny. You have to go back to the glory days of Miami of Florida to see an Independent program be successful in baseball. Cal, on the other hand, is dropping baseball after this season and what a scene it would be for Cal fans to see their baseball team take their last hurrahs at TD Ameritrade Park? Won't be a dry eye in that house for sure... But, I see DBU's offense taking the series and ending Cal's program in the process)

There fixed it for you. Go Bears! :D

I'm ecstatic that Cal's keeping their program and I made sure to tell that to some of the Cal fans when they were down in Tucson. Them sticking around can do nothing but good for the Pac-12.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)

Things got so bad for Cal there for a bit. Not only was their baseball team in jeopardy, their rugby team, which is the most successful in the history of American collegiate rugby, was going to be dropped as well.

And the Arizona State Sun Devils are your 2011 College Softball World Series Champions!

While I will admit that ASU was clearly the better team than us this year, I'm trying hard not to puke right now.

Whatever, we'll be back next year. Title #9 will be in Tucson sooner than #3 in Tempe.

Woohoo

Has anyone noticed that 90% of kevins posts are about asu, it sounds like arizona may have been someone's second choice and now they are very bitter. :P

It's simple, man: He's an Arizona fan, which means that you must at the very least give Arizona State fans a hard time (Although picking on the few Sun Dork fans here can be quite fun you know. :P)

Anyway, the Super Regional began yesterday with Florida, North Carolina, Arizona State and Vanderbilt winning their respective Game 1's. These four teams can earn a trip to Omaha with wins today. The other four series (UC Irvine-Virginia, Texas A&M-Florida State, UConn-South Carolina and Dallas Baptist-Cal at Santa Clara) begin today.

No, I never applied to ASU. Besides, I wouldn't have been rejected anyway, what with their ~90% acceptance rate.

I have actually enjoyed watching NCAA baseball today over anything else.

For those who will ask, neither Cal nor Dallas Baptist had diamonds eligible to host a Super Regional, even though lights are not a "requirement".

A. Cal does not have lights at all.

B. DBU does have lights but don't meet NCAA standards (for now). They also fail to have required seating, and concessions. They bid QuikTrip Park, 5 miles away in Grand Prairie, but were rejected. The school has approved the renovations.

C. Prospective host institutions must submit a minimum financial guarantee of $35,000, which shall be 75 percent of the estimated net receipts as submitted onthe hosting proposal (online proposed budget). The $35,000 minimum applies to both two-day and three-day super regional competitions.

Santa Clara could have been a poor choice as they had Commencement earlier today.

See, DarkJourney brought up why Cal couldn't host (no lights) but I didn't realize that DBU's home park wasn't up to snuff for the NCAA. I also think that the NCAA wanted at least one regional to be held out west because the rest of them are in the Southern part of the nation.

Speaking of DBU, they were recently given provisional membership to the Missouri Valley in baseball. This means they'll get conference games now (Creighton and Wichita State are no slouches, mind you), but they won't be eligible for the conference's regular season title and the conference tournament. Should things go well, DBU could be an associate member of the MVC by 2013.

I understand that, but the NCAA places baseball schools in one of eight regions. In regards to the SuperRegionals, DBU is in the same region at Texas, TAMU, OK State and Creighton (Midwest). but TCU is located in the West region (for now). Meanwhile Florida is in the South and Florida State and Miami are in the Atlantic region.

Nothing making sense here... Seems like the M.O. for the NCAA no matter what sport you're talking about.

Anyway, after yesterday's action:

-North Carolina and Vanderbilt become the first two teams to reach Omaha. For the Heels, it's their fifth trip in the last six seasons while Vanderbilt is making their first ever trip to Omaha. Oh, and these teams will face each other in the first round at Omaha as well.

-Texas and Mississippi State both won their respective Game 2's (Mississippi State won on a walk-off 2 run homer in the bottom of the ninth) to set up Game 3 today.

-Virginia, California, Texas A&M, and South Carolina all won their respective Game 1's. Each of these teams can advance to Omaha with wins today.

Wow- Mississippi State just jumped ahead of Florida 6-4. I thought Florida would have had this series easily wrapped up and I suppose from the turnout of their fans, they did too!

Actually, Florida comes back to win the game and heads to the College World Series in back-to-back years for the first time ever.

So, that makes it two SEC schools going to Omaha... South Carolina can make it three with a win today over UConn.

Yeah I saw that- quite a few long balls hit in that series.
