lmfao

every day I'm trappin'

So I was looking at the Stars' roster, since they provide the opposition in the Blackhawks' first two games of the year. Holy crap, this team is baaad. And that scares me. You can beat talented, and you can beat untalented, but I don't know how you gameplan for a team that's as relentlessly untalented as this one other than "incapacitate Steve Ott before he can injure players or innocent civilians," because minus Brad Richards, that's been about the only aspect of the Stars' game for the last three years.

Every skater on the Coyotes sucks, too, which is not news, but there's no Bryzgalov to save their asses anymore. Kings and Sharks are going to get fat on these two teams like foie gras geese.

In a related story, this happened:

When reached for comment, Patrick Kane remarked that his girlfriend was really upset about what Toews did to her older brother.

So, the Stars have no owner and are tanking to the point where they're even passing up 3rd jersey revenue, the Coyotes are still the Coyotes, the Islanders seem destined for a 14,000-seat arena, the Panthers are I don't even know anymore, the Blue Jackets are set up for a make-or-break season, the Devils swear they aren't plummeting toward bankruptcy, there's a weird smell starting to emanate from Denver, the earth's been salted in media market 8 thanks to a gaggle of ownership boobs, and it would be really nice if someone bought the Blues already. Oh, and the union and the owners are going back to the bargaining table in the next offseason.

Yup. League's doin' fiiiiiiiiiine.

Watch, the Stars will still win 30 games on the year, mostly by dragging teams into the abyss with them and getting lucky in shootouts. Three of those wins will be against the Hawks, too. Ugh. I'm gonna hate this skeleton of a team this year, aren't I.

If you go into the year with my mindset, that it's a throwaway year designed to ensure plenty of future cap space that's already succeeded in locking up Patrick Sharp (uh-oh appendix) for the long-term, then the inevitable 7 or 8 seed and first-round exit doesn't seem so bad.

Also, it helps that there have been some fantastic beer sales in my area lately.

I hope he doesn't see Dunn's doctor.

I can't tell if they're trying to contend this year or not. I mean, all things considered, this is a pretty talented roster, and I have them finishing in the top five pending the acquisition of a center somewhere down the road. But there's definitely a stopgap feel to guys like Brunette, Mayers, and O'Donnell: they have no real future here. Last year was full of stopgap guys too, but the difference is that this year's one-year wonders are solid NHL roleplayers and last year's were guys who were barely hanging on and are indeed out of the league now. Even with all those scrubs on the roster, the Hawks still had a pretty awesome goal differential and were often just supremely unlucky, which attests to how good the real players are. I think they'll have a pretty good year and see how far they can take this thing, but I think the real window opens when Morin, Smith, Leddy, Saad, and Kruger come into bloom.

Did this for the East in that Maple Leafs thread, I'll do it for the West here:

Will make the playoffs: San Jose, Vancouver, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles

Might make the playoffs: Anaheim, Nashville, Minnesota, Calgary, Edmonton

Won't make the playoffs: St. Louis, Columbus, Colorado, Phoenix, Dallas

Jets sign Bogosian 2 yrs, $5M, $2.5M per. This should take him right into UFA status, does it not?

Nope, still an RFA after current deal ends.

Unrestricted free agency is seven years or age 27, whichever comes first, so he'll still be under team control for two more years after this deal is up. Good signing for the Jets.

You know, I'm pretty sure the Coyotes still haven't re-signed Kyle Turris. Wonder if anyone will snatch him up.

THE ISLANDERS ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING SMART!!!!

Tavares signed 6 yrs/$33M. Nice long term deal that's not, umm, a typical Islander long term deal

That's because he's not a goalie or a washed up former Russian enigma. That said I'm glad JT is locked up on the Island.

Congratulations, Columbus Blue Jackets! Despite earning one playoff berth in ten seasons and an 0-4 record in postseason play, you are now inexplicably Too Big To Fail!

http://www.dispatch....ased-today.html

Casino tax revenues would finance the public purchase of Nationwide Arena, under a proposed deal announced this afternoon.

Franklin County and Columbus would pledge up to a third of the tax revenue they collect from the Hollywood Casino on the West Side through 2039 to finance the $42.5 million purchase of the arena from Nationwide Realty Investors and pay to operate it, said John Rosenberger, a lawyer hired by Columbus and the county in 2009 to negotiate an arena deal. The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority would own the arena.

Under the agreement, Nationwide would invest $52 million in the Blue Jackets and would take a 30 percent ownership interest in the team. It would also pay an additional $28.5 million to the Blue Jackets to purchase naming rights to the arena for 10 years.

The $42 million purchase price for the arena is slightly lower than the $44 million value Nationwide placed on it during court proceedings to set the taxable value of the building in 2006, a case in which it was in the company's interest to set the price as low as possible. The county auditor had valued the arena at $129.7 million. It cost $147.1 million to build in 1999, Nationwide said at the time.

The good part about the signing is that it's only 2 years and only $2.5 million per season.

Jets fans will quickly learn to detest Bogosian's play on the ice. His best play was the tail-end of his rookie season and the first 15 games or so the following season. The rest of his career has been pretty disappointing, especially all of last season. I was really hoping that the Thrashers would have traded him at the deadline while he had some value left.

It's like he regressed from his rookie season to Year Three. Have fun with his turnover prowess, Jets fans!
