Mini Collectible NFL Helmets

I was rummaging through my football cards and found my collection of OLD miniature NFL helmets. I used to get one each time I went to this local video store. I was wondering if anyone else collected these as well. I am missing the Saints. Photos below.

I have all 32 teams, though I actually "made" a couple of them.

I used a blank navy-blue helmet, printed up a couple Texans logos, and glued them to the helmet. I also did the same for when teams updated their helmet logos within the past 8 years or so (Falcons, Giants, Ravens, and Seahawks to name a few), and had to make one for the Eagles because I didn't get the decals enclosed with the helmet from the gumball machine.

The only one I haven't updated is the Chargers.

I also still have the old helmets of some teams: Broncos, Jets, and Bucs for example.

I think my new Bucs helmet is backwards because the decals were mislabeled, and I hadn't yet seen their helmet.

I have a collection of about 4000 football helmets. Most of them are custom made. I also have a big collection of custom made baseball and hockey vending helmets (I call them Gumball Helmets).

Here is my Flickr site which features lots of my artwork and some photos of completed sets.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Got the entire set as a Christmas present back in '79, complete with goal post display case. Still have them.

Yea man i loved collecting those as a kid over the course of the past 20 years i collected like 200 of em...everyone you have...every team from the early 90s-today, new and updated versions. Great times goin to the local acme and grabbin them out of the machine..i used to hate getting one i already had and would drive my parents nuts to try to get me one i needed. I needed the 49ers one yr and we tried 6 times...the manager came out, opened the machine and gave it to me no lie! lol

I would collect them and then rip off the decals and make them look like college teams or local high school teams. I finally ditched them a few years ago because they were collecting dust and just became clutter.

I have about 15-20 that my dad collected when he was a kid. They're all in pretty rough shape, but I've still got them in my room.

I've got 200-300 of them in the closet at my parents house. I absolutely loved going to the grocery store with my mom and getting as many as I could with the handful of change I found around my house. Bummer they stopped making them.

Haha, very observant. I actually have the sticker for the other side but it fell off and lost its adhesiveness.

I must have bought over a hundred of those back in college. I made college teams out of the spares using plain stickers that I'd design with markers or colored pens. I have them sitting in a box somewhere.

Bill - I'm not sure I realized you were a member here. Always great to see your contributions to the VHM. Of course, I love your collection.

It's where I sit.

I had about 25 of the 32 teams back in the early 90's. I'm not sure what happened to that collection. I would pump a quarter into a gumball machine that had those helmets everytime I made a trip to the Krogers or Wal-Mart by my house. The first 10 or so were easy, after that it was hard to not get a repeat.

I used to have almost the entire league (was WAY before the Jags and Panthers were born).

One thing that has always bugged me...WHY would anyone put the white (blank) stripe on a team helmet that didn't have a stripe (Eagles, Chiefs, Bears, etc. on first post). I've seen this SO many times on here or on helmets for sale on eBay.

I was a kid and knew they weren't intended to be used, they're just there because that's how the blank sticker sheets were cut. Throw them out! :P

I painted some facemasks too! (Testers model paint). Although, back in the mid-80s when I collected, they actually had colored masks for many of them...Skins' gold, many black facemasks, blue for the Bills, Seahawks and Lions, orange for the Bucs, yellow for the Chargers, red for Pats and Oilers...etc. Then the producers got lazy and gave everyone white.

You can see Paul Lukas interview Bill here. He has an impressive collection! I used to collect both the football and baseball gumball helmets too. I also would customize the extas into NCAA schools. I think I had a couple hundred at one point. I sold my collection a few years back to focus my collection on ice cream sundae helmets.

I would try to see which teams' helmets were in the slots that were soon to be dropping. If I saw a team's helmet that I didn't have, I'd get the 3-4 duplicate helmets just so I could get the new one. Otherwise, I'd wait a couple days and see which helmets were "on deck".
