Latest Rumor: NHL Team Expected to Announce Rebranding in 2012

Has Jeff Loria secretly purchased the Panthers? So long Florida Panthers, hello Miami Panthers and orange and black!

Or are the Carolina Hurricanes changing their colors to navy, green, and silver, and changing their name to "Hartford Whalers"?

That's not funny.

No way it's the Panthers. They are going back to red and appealing to the hardcore fans. They would not become the Miami Panthers because a) they have their own arena which is not in Miami, but in Broward County near Fort Lauderdale, and B) they are named after the FLORIDA Panther animal.

Maybe the rebrand is more territorial. With Atlanta gone, both Nashville and/or Carolina theoretically have a ?potential? new market to appeal to (mostly for TV and merchandising), so rebrands in the effect of geography or territory such as Southern Predators (or new mascot) or perhaps the Southern Hurricanes might be an option, replete with incorporation of colors and identity of the thrashers to appeal to disaffected Atl fans (Nashville is three hours away and Raleigh is 50 something minutes, so the Atl fans may not physically go yet may watch and buy product that is trying to identify with ?them?). Also, the ?Lonestar? theory plays with this stream of though in order to (misguidedly) block future Houston Exapniosn/relocation as well as the Panthers identity package changing (though drastically) to the Tropical Panthers (or even new Mascot/identity package as they played with both tropical puck themes in early marketing and even Panteras de South Florida at one point) ,

If you have anything that can make it from Raleigh to Atlanta in 50 minutes without taking flight, please, clue me in on it. Every time I've ever made the trip, it's been 5 hours, minimum.

Interesting ideas here. (although Raleigh is somewhere around 6 hours from ATL.) As a Thrashers and Coyotes fan I will probably have no one to root for in 2 or less years, so I'll need a new team.. Nashville would be ideal, considering that I have prior grudges, as a Thrashers fan, for all of the other teams in the Southeast division. If Nashville did something to attempt to include former Thrashers fans, I wouldn't complain.

Something no one else in the NHL has done? Clear fabric on the sweaters! [/Charlotte Bobcats speculation]

and here I was, all excited to make that joke.

When I was an active member of the North Carolina bar I happened to become acquainted with a couple of guys in Raleigh who were in a firm (albeit in a different department) that did quite a bit of work for the Canes. There had been talk (and this is going back about 6 years) of eventually taking the team regional and playing up to half of the team's home games in other venues in North and South Carolina. My guess is that they'd sprinkle games between Greensboro, Charlotte, Greenville and Columbia.

Keeping in mind that the original post discussed a re-brand AND something that's never been done before, I'm guessing that the "something that's never been done before" doesn't necessarily relate to the rebrand. I could certainly see the organization wanting to hold on to the Carolina portion of the team name (for logical reasons) but to redo the nickname and visual identity package to establish the organization as belonging principally to the Carolinas and not just a Raleigh institution being passed around the region.

Mac, I know that you are fairly well connected among the Raleigh legal community yourself. Perhaps we can have an offline discussion to compare notes and do some further sleuthing.

To be continued . . . . .

Or, perhaps not

I have a strong feeling it's the Florida Panthers. I'm thinking they'll want to go with a more tropical look. While they will go for a tropical look, they're going to keep it old fashioned and classy. I also have a strong feeling they'll change the name 'Panthers' to something like the 'Florida Tropics' or the 'Florida Sun'. Maybe even the 'Florida Splashers'. I'm expecting it to look a little like this, but maybe a bit more 'Nike Pro Combat':

Is your "strong feeling" based on... well, anything, or are you just making things up because you... well, who knows why?

Yale's senario makes the most sense of anything that's been mentioned so far in this thread. It'd be weird tho not knowing what city your team is playing on next if they're visiting the Carolina BBQers.

If it is the nickname, my vote would be Dallas. Lonestars anyone?

Kings Cross AFC -BIP, Winnipeg Falcons - TNFF, St. Louis Archers - MLF

Winnipeg is in southern Canada so they could be the Manitoba Thrashers in 2011 and be the first team to revert to a former name and become the Winnipeg Jets in 2012.

The winnipeg team sure won't be called "thrashers"

I wonder if this potential identity overhaul will consist of having the corporate sponsor's name within the official team name and corporate logos on their jerseys?

that would be terrible. imho, that's just one step short of having ads on jerseys. heck, the sharks black thirds named after an hp product (i forget which) kinda made me queasy.

im surprised that people werent upset at the original Mighty Ducks logo which was just blatant commercialism.
