AL and NL All-Star Game Rosters

Tell me how Teixeira is not on this team, I'm going to sound like a homer here but 25 homers should be enough to get you in.

He put up the 4th best AL numbers for 1st basemen behind Adrian Gonzalez, Miguel Cabrera, and Paul Konerko. They all have a higher AVG, OBP, SLG, and OPS. I have no problem with him not getting voted on the team. Home runs aren't everything.

Who the hell is Alex Avila?

Are you kidding me? Best catcher in the AL!

I would argue more the catcher having the best first half.

He deserves the accolades, easily, but I don't think he's a better player than Joe Mauer, despite Mauer being injured all year.

Of course. If you believe All-Stars should be picked on current season performance over name recognition, Avila's easily the guy.

Does someone want to tell me who the :censored: Tyler Clippard and Aaron Crow are?

Also glad to see Alex Avila get that starting spot over Martin. (Seriously, Russell Martin?)

On the Angels front, really happy with their two selections, Jered Weaver and Howie Kendrick. Really the only guys even close to being in All-Star consideration. Dan Haren could have had a shot at it as well, but I'm alright with him being off.

In the race for the AL Starter though, I'd say it's definitely down to Weaver and Verlander. Verlander does have one more win and one less loss, but I'd say that's more dependent on the Tigers being 4th in the AL in runs and the Angels being 11th in the AL. Weaver has a lower ERA at 1.92 to Verlander's 2.32. Both are up there in strikeouts, WHIP is close. Verlander has 4 CGs to Weaver's 3. Both have two shutouts.

It'll ultimately come down to their rotation dates as it always does. Right now, I know Weaver isn't scheduled to pitch on Sunday (his next start is Thursday), but it looks like Verlander is. So as of right now, I'd project Jered Weaver to be the AL Starter in Arizona.

Aaron Crow has been one of the Royals top prospects and current setup man who closed when Soria looked broken earlier in the season. With the team setup the way it is, he's probably the only real choice for a Royals all-star. Clippard is a former washed out Yankees top starting prospect who has found success in the Washington bullpen.

Verlander will be replaced, because he pitches Sunday. As will Felix and I think one other starter (Shields maybe?) Piñeda will probably replace Felix but Haren has a good shot to be one of the other replacements (there's a group of 5-6 that aren't that far off.. Ogando, Masterson, Humber, Romero...)

I'm happy to see King Felix and League (The best closer in the AL at this moment, but I assume that can be argued) on the All-Star team... But damn does it feel weird as hell to not see Ichiro on the All-Star roster (Starters or reserves and even the last man ballot).

Glad to see Ryan Vogelsong on the NL team. What a story that guy has been. The homer in me wants to argue that he deserves to start the game, but with the year Lee and Ol' Roy are having, it probably won't happen.

Although it's bad to see Teixeira and CC Sabathia off the All-Star team, they'll be eventually placed as replacements.

Well Sabathia won't because he's most likely pitching Sunday. So he wouldn't be available in the game anyway. I was just surprised that they didn't even name him to the team. Then he could just turn it down and let someone else have it.

I won't disagree with Avila getting the start. Its just been a very weak year so far in the AL with catchers. If he doesen't get the nod then who? Nobody is really doing that great. He's just the best out of a really bad bunch. It happens sometimes. '87 with NL second basemen. Can anyone name a person who had a solid year other then Juan Samuel? Sandberg's the closest but he misses over a month.

You make Avila sound bad. He's gotta be in the top 5 catchers of the MLB.

And unlike Russell Martin or Matt Wieters, Avila's the only one hitting .300 with just about 50 RBI's. How valuable is that?

I'm not knocking Avila so much as I am everyone else.

Avila's having a very good season and would be an all-star in most years. This year though he's pretty much the slam dunk starter going by the numbers. I'm having a hard time coming up with anyone else even close. Most of the starters are hitting well below .250

I'm hoping to see Jair Jurrjens start the game and give the NL a solid 6 or 7 innings. He's clearly the best the NL has to offer (as he is the ace on the NL's best team), why not use him to keep the AL off the board?

The standings would disagree with you.

Too many worthy first basemen. Someone was going to get screwed no matter what happened.
