Radially arched fonts

I've looked around online for a decent tutorials or guidelines on creating a radially arched lettering. I'm trying to figure out what are the "rules" when making a radially arched name on the back of the jersey, so I took Mr. Air's jersey for reference.

The angle of each letter depends on total number of letters in the players last name I suppose, but how do I get to that number?

Is this the right way?

I can't figure out how to start arching (I don't want to resort to Photoshops warp text effect because it looks awful), and what is the reference point from which they arch the letters...am I on the right track with my current idea?

If you're using photoshop create a path or circle and then use the click on that with your type tool and you will see a wavey line underneath it meaning it's "type on a path" and then it will type on the outside of your circle or top of your path.

I think what he's trying to say is at what angle ahould NOB's be radially arched? At least thats what I got out of it.

But this is actually a pretty interesting. I'm guessing that the center of the circle should be placed directly in the middle of the invisible square made up of the back numbers (since that's basically what the text is warping around).

In other sports though, such as hockey, that's a different story.

Well, take a look at Jarrod Saltalamacchia's name. The Ranger's orgnaization decided to go all wrap-around with it.

Boston went with more of a typical arch.

I know in the actual jersey business that eyeballing the arch is still used. That is one way that it would have been done before the illustrator/photoshop design era.
