Wait, so they have turtle shell helmets that don't match anything else in the uniform set

No, there's a turtle shell pattern on the shoulders and pants. Check out TeamBuilder.

Sure the patterns match, but the colors match literally nothing else in the set. WTF Maryland?

Maryland's new uniforms are a classic case of too many things going on at once. They had potential to look good, but the random lines and gradients ruin it for me. The turtle shell helmet is a great idea on paper, but in reality it does not look good, maybe a different color would have looked better. The black helmet needs a logo, but I like the flag inspired helmet stripe, and the matte look.

I'm not normally one to jump on the "O my God they're the worst thing ever bandwagon"... But this is awful. Its like they took all of the bad components in their design and decided to go with them all. I wouldn't say they had the best helmet, but it was a good looking one, despite it not matching their uniform. But to ditch the logo, join the matte helmet fad, and a turtle shell? Really? And then the gradients and random stripes? Under Armour tries too hard and this is their outcome.

Well, since it's not YFYS or BFBS, I don't think they look that bad.

There's more to good uniform design than adhering to some Paul Lukas catch phrase.

Thank you! Some people around here are like Paul Lukas' droids

That's because in a lot of cases, Lukas is right.

Paul Lukas? Really, right about what? I'm sorry, but he's just another smug ESPN guy who thinks his opinion matters to everyone. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten to the point where he becomes an "Insider" that you have to pay for. I'll read his blog maybe once every four months, but overall it's just the same pure drivel of his, love for stirrups and hatred of purple.

There is no right and wrong in the world of opinions, I don't think you have ever grasped that

For the record, the fact that there's been two and a half pages devoted in this thread just to dissecting these uniforms, along with the multiple Twitter and blog mentions tonight alone, and the fact that our players and younger fans absolutely love the new uniforms means that Under Armour has probably achieved EXACTLY what the university hoped to achieve.

I really don't like this matte helmet trend. I have yet to see one that looks better than the helmet would've looked if it had the more traditional sheen.

I neither like it nor understand it. It's confounding, but I guess it's the latest thing that those deluded kids think is OMG SO KOOL!

Wait, so they have turtle shell helmets that don't match anything else in the uniform set, and matte black helmets, and both have no logo on the side?

I like separate elements of the uniform, but what a mish mash of a design.

I believe the term we are looking for is "cluster :censored: "

Where are the logos on the side of the helmet?

I am normally a huge fan of modern looks, but this is horrible! UGLY is best thing I can say about this look.

1) Some good ideas, but too busy overall.

2) I find it pathetic that UA just copies everything Nike does. Have they come up with any uni trend or element on their own?

3) I don't really like the matte helmet trend, but I think it works with these new Nike uniforms that are dull, not shiny like the older ones.

Perhaps they're compensating for the knowledge that Randy Edsall's boring ball control style offense and none-too-aggressive defense won't make anyone bat an eyelash?

It's not like Maryland has to fight a perceived "east coast bias" from the media. If the Terps finish this upcoming season 5-7 people will wonder (again) why they fired Fridge after a 9-win season and five bowl wins in ten years - as well as why they went to a uniform set that one friend of mine described as "the Maryland state flag put into a food processor".

I'm not a Lukas fanboy, but he established his design journalism credentials for about 15 years before ESPN gave him a column. He's not a member of ESPN's stable of ex-athletes who feel qualified to talk about particular players' "grit" just because they used to be able to run fast or hit a baseball.

oh ,my god ,i strong recommend you to have a visit on the website ,or if i'm the president ,i would have an barceque with the anthor of the articel .

I never realized how many people hated the matte helmet look. I think it looks good when used with dark colors. My only problem with the look is when teams use a metallic facemask with a matte helmet. A matte facemask to match the helmet would look much better IMO.

I think it ONLY looks good when used with dark colors. I can't see a team like, let's say, Illinois making it work. For some reason, I think Oregon State makes it work, but that's about it. I guess it doesn't look bad with Maryland, but now that they're the Oregon of Under Armour, I'm a little put off by it.

I don't hate the matte look. I don't like it, but I mostly don't understand it. Why use it?

The same reason teams are using everything else they are on CFB uniforms: because it's different. Kids today want to be different (both from the past and each other), but the irony is they all choose the same ways to be different.

To me, matte only makes sense on helmets for throwbacks that were worn with leather helmets. I may change my mind this season after seeing them with the new, less shiny uniform materials, but that is TBD.

This should've used a matte helmet:
