Mets Uniform History

No black please. Just look at the workmark from a distance on the image from the op. It's very muddy and hard to read with the black in there.

Get rid of the black, blue alternate for road, orange alt for home :)

Dear god no.

I don't see how that shot of Dykstra-Gooden-Strawberry even shows they are wearing black belts. Blue belts are usually hidden in the shadow of the jersey and can appear to look black. Even shots on a cloudy day can make blue or dark blue belts appear to be black. Full sun is usually the only clear-cut way to see the color of a belt on the uni. I can't find any pics of a Met wearing a black belt conclusively being fully illuminated. Every conclusive shot in full sun they always are blue. Look at old pics of the Mets from the 60's and sometimes they look like they're script or socks are black, but they are not.

Maybe you can't tell from that particular shot that Dykstra and Strawberry are wearing black belts. (To me it is apparent even there, especially on Dykstra.) But in the many, many shots I have looked at (in sunshine, or in well-lit night games) from all eras, I have seen only black belts.

If you've found pictures of blue belts, I'd love to see them.

My conclusion, based on my research, is that the team never officially had blue belts, always black. But, some guys occasionally slipped them in there, much as some Mets today wear non-standard orange undershirts. Is there anyone else who has an opinion on this?

All the photos I've seen of are of blue belts not black.

I also think the Mets would look amazin' in this shade of blue cap.

I did a quick search and it looks to me like the belts were blue in the '80s, though I'll admit that on 99% of the photos it's hard to say for sure that it's blue and not black. This is one of the better ones I saw that clearly shows blue.

I'd say that, among those shots, only the belt on Strawberry is blue. So that's another example of that.

But there are many more of these (all black, all large pictures):

Those are all blue... most of the time its just the lighting or the terrible film grain they had back then. Plus the Mets blue was darker then it is today back in the 60's due to the different material.U1319881.jpg?size=67&uid={714de914-7b37-4269-b73b-87f9f441ac35}

It's not really conclusive in most of those pictures. I could argue that if the belt is black so are the stirrups in some of them. The Seaver one is the blackest, but even that could be a darker blue or just lighting.

Old photographs are not conclusive for historical colors.

But most of them do appear to indicate that the original Mets blue was closer to that of the Dodgers than the shade they use now.

Well original the hat was the Giants orange NY and the Dodgers blue hat.

The Binghamton Mets use the light navy/orange color scheme for their cap.

I agree it's a good color combo but navy, although a great color, is already overused in MLB. The Mets need to own the royal/orange color scheme.

I won't post any more pics....thought it would be a cool look back in Mets history, though!

Lighting makes all the difference. The shade and cloudy/night games will definitely cast the blue in a shadow where it may appear to be black. The Mets definitely only wore blue belts from the '60-'90's.Some of those pics posted earlier trying to prove the belts were black prove this point (you can even see the blue in some of those pics).

In my perfect world, my favorite team would wear the uniforms above. Bring back tradition with a taste of more recent history.

That is a really nice look. Also agree with others here that have mentioned the '97 unis as the best.

Wasn't there a cream-colored alt a couple years back? Something like a block "N Y" on the chest, with Mr. Met on the sleeve? IIRC, it was some kind of a fauxback or something? Please tell me I'm not imagining this!

EDIT: Yep, found it! August 2009, three game series wearing a New York Giants "inspired" uni, with a giant "N Y" on the chest in the "Red Sox" font and Mr. Met on the right sleeve.

So are you guys saying that the Mets' belts have always been blue? Or are you saying that they have used both blue and black belts?

Always been blue since '62 and on. That is, up until '98 when they introduced black into the color scheme and then they began wearing black belts along with blue belts.

I fixed two little flaws on the graphic - how's this?

mets-2.jpg

Very, very accurate! I would say two things:

1. As stated in a previous response by another poster, I think inclusion of front numbers where appropriate would be good.

2. The early home jersey changed to pure white from the off-white cream sometime in the early 1970s, when the team switched to the double-knit material. There's a pic of Willie Mays earlier in the thread wearing the white double-knit home uniform, and he retired at the end of the 1973 World Series.

Isn't Collins's belt black there?

Sure looks it.

I'd take black belts if we could get the Mets to go NNOB again. :P
