KHL Lokomotiv Yaroslavl tragedy

If We Are Marshall was correct, West Virginia wore a green cross on the back of their helmets after the crash that killed Marshall's football team.

Yeah, the movie is correct.

WVU quarterback Mike Sherwood, whose younger brother Kelly played for Marshall in 1971 tried to arrange a charity game against Ohio University the following week, an open date for WVU, so that the proceeds could be donated to benefit the crash victims. There was consideration given to the suggestion that the Mountaineers wear green jerseys for their final game against Maryland. While WVU students wore green armbands in the week following the crash, nothing was officially done by the football team for the one remaining game on the schedule. Instead, in accordance with Coach Bowden's strong Christian beliefs, a green cross was placed on the rear of each helmet for the spring football practice session to honor the crash victims. Thus, the Mountaineers did in fact wear a white helmet that had a green cross in the back as shown in the accompanying photo but it was done only during spring practice in 1971.

Patch is nice, nice tribute logo. Hope the NHL goes the ribbon route.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Sad day for hockey fans EVERYWHERE

(not my work)

I may just find a way to finagle that into my signature.

The fact that their deaths caused your signature to get even larger only adds to the tragedy.

I wonder what the Ducks will do for Salei. I don't know what the buzz is down in the OC, but would it be too far of a reaching thought to possibly retire his number? He played eight or so solid years in Anaheim (franchise leader in games played as a defenseman - 594), and from what I gather was a real fan favorite (not to mention he contributed a huge moment in Ducks history with that Game 3 (?) winning goal in 2003). This is just me personally, but I think I'd retire it.

If it's within the limit, it's not taboo.

Eh, there's been a small sentiment on message boards for a number retirement, and as much as we all love Rusty, I don't think he's going to get it retired. The team has practically all but officially said that Teemu Selanne's #8 will be the first number retired by the team (then either Giguere or Scott Niedermayer to follow). Yeah he had a long career and is up there on some of the team leaderboards because of it, but I don't think it's number retirement worthy.

Now I'd be surprised if they didn't wear a patch for Rusty. There most likely will be some sort of tribute for Rusty.

If they did end up retiring the jersey because of the circumstances, I wouldn't make a stink about it, and I'm not adverse to it. But if I were making the decisions, I don't think I would.

Jaroslav Halak will have a tribute to Pavol Demitra on the back of his mask. It's pretty great.

Halak was a countryman and international teammate of Pavs. And of course Demitra spent the majority of his NHL career with the Blues.

Patch to be worn by the Hurricanes in honor of Josef Vasicek:

I kind of hate dehumanizing someone by simply putting their number on a patch, especially if 1) they weren't a current player wearing said number, or 2) they weren't so famous for that number that it's retired.

They did the same thing for Steve Chaisson
